After a long hiatus, we have restored the flashchat module on the board and the application is now live! Find the chat room here (https://www.aaroads.com/forum/chat/flashchat.php) or by clicking "CHAT" on the top menu bar.
Feel free to report to any of the Admins, Mods, or State Properties if you notice bugs or adverse features with the chat. We've uncovered a few - for example, don't get your heart set on modifying your colors from one of the available themes.
It's not safe for mobile devices.
Safe? Explain further.
Safe was probably the wrong word choice, but it didn't work properly on my phone. It loaded, but it wouldn't let me do anything.

It filters the letter sequence "kum". I think once we fix some of the default stupidity you'll be fine.
I still can't type (my keyboard doesn't appear on screen) but I can click on the smileys and do everything else. It also kicks me out whenever I switch tabs, so whatever the problem is, it's definitely on my end.

We've noticed. Can you tell us more specifically?
Well, I keep seeing a blue screen.
For those of us in the chat, it says you log in and out with great frequency in rapid succession. Alex says he's seen the blue screen before, so we're on it.

For those of us using Apple devices (which prevents using a Flash player), what's the server and room?
Any chance we can add a "plain" and/or "roadgeeky" theme, preferrably with a dark background, and discourage people from choosing dark text colors?
By the way, the chat works on my phone*, though it takes a bit of fidgeting with resizing the entry pane first, and the options dialog doesn't fit on the screen so I have to switch to portrait mode to access the buttons that dismiss it...
(*T-Mobile G2 with Google, running Android 2.3 (I think) on HTC hardware, default browser app)
We want to redo it to match the forum theme (green panel background with light green text area). We're just trying to figure out how to make a theme for it.
Part of the problem with the default theme is that the blue color works fairly badly with anything but white and a few really light colors.

There are other platforms it could be, like iChat or something. But it very well could be a closed protocol.
We have a major problem in the chat room. Chatters are leaving the room without saying "armchair time" or they're saying "armchair time" but not saying "so don't let (subject) bite." This is not acceptable and you guys need to be more considerate and responsible.

I was collecting GPS points for work today and needed them to be highly accurate since I was recording section corners to do a faux-survey to see if it was going to be worth paying a real surveyor over a property dispute between us and the state. I went back to the office to post-process to improve accuracy from our local CORS correction stations, and all the federally run (read all the base stations within a couple hundred miles) base stations are shut down, so yeah, fuck the shutdown.

Again, we disagree on terminology. I don't believe the response to an HTTP request is itself a "file" unless the client decides to save a copy. However, having stated what I believe to be the root of the disagreement, I have no interest in a protracted public argument on the matter.
If you take out the .php at the end, it starts to load and then goes white.
@NE2: I think I may have initially missed the point of you misquoting me. It is now apparent to me that you probably didn't intend to assert that the PHP file on the server was empty. This makes arguing even more pointless.
It works again for now...

One that can be intergrated with SMF. Steve would be up for a chat without login integration, either here or at his site. The previous program was from 2009 and had virtually no security.

I figured out how someone with access to the JavaScript code (which is stored on AARoads servers) can modify the palette of text colors available to chat participants. I find the current 17-color selection a bit limited, so here I propose a palette of 43. It's essentially the FHWA standard colors, plus lighter/darker/grayer variants of most of them.
I think a few of these could possibly be considered redundant, and eliminated, right? Is there something notably missing? I think it would be prudent to get community consensus before attempting to implement the change, especially considering I don't have the privileges to do it myself. :D

There should be a way to set up a sandbox, but I think it'd require you to put a fair amount of trust in someone competent in PHP – or install a completely separate instance of the chat just for experimentation. It's probably much easier to make a backup of the file that holds (among other things) the list of colors, so you can easily revert the change if testing doesn't go well.
