Title: One Way Roads that have freeway segements in it
Post by: roadman65 on December 08, 2012, 07:58:00 AM
I do not know if this has ever been discussed, but does anyone know of one way roads that are freeways?

I have found 10th Avenue in Altoona, PA is one where it is one way southbound.
Then you have 9th Street SW in Washington, DC that is a submerged freeway one way southbound.
Also, part of 12th Street SW in our Nation's Capital (9th Street's counterpart) is a one way tunnel under the Mall. Along with the connector leading from I-395 to its tunnel as a one way northbound freeway.

Any others out there?

US 322 west of State College, PA is a short freeway just after its western split from I-99. There's a single intersection that ends it. However, after that, the directions split, and westbound is full freeway until the directions re-merge, yet eastbound isn't.

Not sure if that counts...

Westbound I-76 through Nebraska.
Sorry, I just had to.  Vehicle Code definitions generally define 'roadway' as meaning only one carriageway of a divided highway, so by that definition Westbound I-76 through Nebraska would be a pair of one-way freeways.

Point well taken.  Since  every freeway is made up of two (and sometimes 3 or 4) carriageways it would then be pointless to have this, so I amend the topic to one unpaired roadway that is a freeway by itself.  I feel that most know what it means anyway, however, lets try to make perfect English if we can.  So I admit I made bad phrasing "again" as two other members brought it our in a past thread that I used misplaced nouns, verbs, etc.

Oh, I was just having a bit of fun, mainly because I don't have a real example to post, yet I like to hear myself talk type.  And thank you for not pointing out my mistake that Westbound I-76 is in no way a pair of one-way freeways, since it is in fact only one roadway.

I kind of don't think it really applies to the subject at hand if I read it right, but just in case - or an honorable mention - I'll put up the eastbound Boulevard of the Allies (PA-885) in Pittsburgh, between the Liberty Bridge & Forbes Ave.
Heading in that direction, it is functionally limited access, with exits to the Parkway East & Forbes Ave - No connecting side streets, and the only break in the median is for "Authorized Vehicles Only".

Westbound there are plenty of connecting side streets, and buildings directly along the highway, and a sidewalk.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but except for Bears game days, southbound Lake Shore Drive in the South Side of Chicago is a freeway almost a half mile longer than northbound (between Roosevelt and 18th). IIRC, there's a median break at Waldron Drive whenever the Bears play at home.

Next year ODOT is to begin a project to construct a 2-lane, northbound-only US 23 "bypass" in a trench between the southbound lanes and the northbound local lanes, from I-270 to the Franklin—Delaware County line, near Worthington, Ohio.  Although with the short length (~1mi) and no exits or free-flow ramps from I-270, classifying the new carriageway as half a freeway would be problematic.

I have found that you're wrong. You're taking a few examples of one-way streets with a ramp or two, or that go through a tunnel, and calling them freeways. By that logic, I live on a freeway, because there are no access points between intersections/driveways./

9th and 12th are logically freeways, of course forming a one-way pair. 10th, not so much. And all the other roads mentioned in this thread, except NY 878, have been two-way roads that are freeways in one direction, not one-way freeways.

There are segments of 9th, 10th and 12th Streets that are not access-controlled that run parallel to the "freeway" limited-access sections.

Please watch your quote attributions.

I disagree. They are extended on/off ramps from I-395 with tunnel sections. I'm not saying I'm right necessarily, but there's a lot of room around what could be labeled a "freeway."

DDOT uses "12th Street Expressway": http://dc.gov/DC/DDOT/About+DDOT/News+Room/Traffic+Advisories/Weekend+Closure+Planned+for+D+Street+Off+Ramp+on+12th+Street+Expressway
Given that you can enter and exit south of the tunnels, they seem like clear freeways rather than long ramps.

Sorry about resurrecting the thread, but the Pulaski Skyway in NJ for the next 2 years. Are there other examples of this due to construction for this long? How about when freeways were first built? Did they ever open one direction significantly before the other?

In 1988 (or so, give or take a year or two), I-45 was torn down and rebuilt through downtown Houston. I drove through during that time and I remember how bizarre and surreal it felt to be driving on an elevated freeway with essentially nothing where the other carriageway should be. I have no idea how long the destruction and reconstruction took or what it was like to live and work through that...

but I'll bet someone on this forum knows....

In Metro Detroit in the 60s, there was a time when M-5, nee M-102, nee I-96 Business was a one-way bypass around Farmington (Eastbound only, IIRC).  Westbound traffic had to follow Grand River Avenue thru Farmington proper to get to I-96.

Sometime in the late 60s or early 70s, they added the westbound carriageway.
