Sweet thanks for sharing!
Has anybody gone ahead and downloaded the actual PDF files and put them in a folder (if it is even possible?) I want the actual files that I can view offline, not the shitty Google viewer.

When viewing the map, click the printer icon on the left side of the toolbar. For me, that downloads the PDF for printing, or viewing outside the browser.

Would it be possible to pack the scanned JPEG rasters into a ZIP file (preserving folder structure) and upload that to Dropbox on a temporary basis? Google Docs works reasonably well for casual, on-the-fly reference, but it doesn't really support comprehensive download of all the map scans that are available, since tree navigation is cumbersome by hand and difficult to automate by script.
