Interesting arrangement, though I'm a little surprised they're using both. In Michigan, you'd only have the Indian River Rd. lefts; Drivers turning left from Kempsville Rd would just be directed to turn right, then go through the Michigan left on Indian River Rd to complete the left turn.

Then again, the Michigan-lefts on Indian River Rd would have at least 2 lanes.

Except at Telegraph and Plymouth, which would be topologically equivalent if the Michigan lefts were on Kempsville.

Two comments:

1) The Michigan left on Indian River Road looks awful close to the main intersection - I would think having it slightly farther west using the Center Lane intersection would be better, but then it looks like there may not be enough space for it there.  Granted, locating it at Center Lane could result in using a three phase signal to allow right turns from Center to enter Indian River - IIRC the one in Utah on UT 71 worked that way.

2) Given the median on Kempsville Road, I have to wonder if another pair of Michigan lefts would not work better than the CFI configuration.

Here is a recent one that I have mentioned before on Md. 3 (Crain Highway) in Gambrills, Maryland.

Waugh Chapel Road & Md. 3 (https://maps.google.com/maps?q=gambrills,+md&hl=en&ll=39.038753,-76.675097&spn=0.004658,0.009645&sll=39.039286,-76.673659&sspn=0.004658,0.009645&t=h&gl=us&hnear=Gambrills,+Anne+Arundel,+Maryland&z=17)

Hey, a triple left-turn only lane that nobody noticed yet, I think. :P

If the map is accurate, it's not a Michigan left or a CFI. It's a J-turn/superstreet.

And I'm extremely curious whether it's the map or the satellite that's accurate.  The satellite doesn't show any U-turns, and I would hope that the U-turns would merge in well before the left turn lanes split off.

According to this article, the map is correct and the intersection was reconfigured in October 2011 to the layout shown on the map. (http://crofton.patch.com/articles/traffic-advisory-waugh-chapel-riedel-road-michigan-u-turn-to-start-tuesday-9-p-m#photo-8168550) There's a press release at the bottom from the State Highway Administration calling it a "Michigan U-Turn" (capitalization of "Turn" theirs).

Strangely, I have never made that left turn, even though I have been through the intersection many times (before it was reconstructed and since).

Looks like this intersection has finally been constructed.  We will see how it works out.

Virginia has discovered the 'Michigan Left' and Michigan has discovered the managed 'X' lane ...
