This outage is temporary though. This old structure carries US Route 1 Bypass over the Piscataqua River between Portsmouth, NH and Kittery, ME. The nearby bridge carrying US Route 1 is in the middle of a replacement project. The only usable span nearby right now is the I-95 bridge. :-o
Also, this bridge seems to be up for replacement after the Memorial Bridge is opened later this year.
Correct. The only other one nearby is the I-95 bridge, which opened in the early 1970s. I want to say 1972? They warn you about crosswinds when rising up to it on the New Hampshire (Portsmouth) side. To get a current view of it, go to www.portsmouthwebcam.com and click on "Tugboats." It gives a nice view of both bridges. "Memorial Bridge Weathervane" gives a current shot of the US Route 1 bridge, which is currently under construction.
There was a short follow-up article on WCSH's site just now. Basically updating the status of the repairs:

SUNDAY UPDATE: Looks like it's lifting up and down again. The bridge is supposed to reopen to traffic on Monday, according to WMUR-TV (ABC) channel 9 of Manchester, NH:

Here we go again! That bridge will now be closed for 2 to 4 weeks. It's because of the big tanker which hit the side of the bridge yesterday:

Looks like the latest reopening date is May 25:
