Title: Tiny little book of Thruway Pictures from the 50's
Post by: djsinco on February 12, 2013, 03:41:07 AM
Here is the cover. There are 10 photos in the booklet. It is only about 3" by 4" and the resolution is marginal. If there is any interest I can scan and post them.

I can't seem to attach the .png image. Does anyone know if I need to have more posts to have this permission, or if not, walk me through how to copy the file into the body of this post?

Thanks!

Dave

I think you need to upload them to a site like Flickr first.

Thanks - I have a Picasa account. I wonder if someone could help and let me know if that is acceptable.

Thanks in advance,

Dave

I'd like to see old Thruway pictures!  Nothing wrong with posting stuff to Picasa as far as I know.

Here is the link to the cover of the booklet. Please let me know if it is viewable by everyone, and if the size is appropriate. I will post the actual pictures, but not tonight. It is bedtime.

Sorry this took so long to post - also, the quality is what one might expect from relatively small photos from the 1950's, plus my scanner is acting up...

Enjoy...

Please try again and let me know. I changed permissions. I can see it on my computer, but I know that is not the point...

Thanks,

Dave

Ah, the old blue signs!  They have been gone for years.  Brings back a lot of memories.

The rock cut photo near Little Falls looks very similar to the descent (westbound) to the notorious Schoharie Creek Bridge.

I assume that means I finally set up the share link properly, correct?

Remember the Beech-Nut baby food factory in Canajoharie? I used to always get a kick out of driving past it...

Oh yes, indeed, at Exit 29.

I had no idea the NY 64 overpass was called the Mae West Bridge. Some kind of tongue-in-cheek about curviness?

And the "finest farmland" east of Rochester is now the finest suburbia.

Finally, the eastward Mohawk Valley view: a similar scene, but taken from an aerial vantage point, was used as the cover of the Thruway's official map at least once.

Working great now, thanks!

What strikes me about the images is how little traffic is on the highway. Certainly couldn't take these pictures now.

It's amazing how little has changed on the Thruway with the exception of signage, pavement striping, and traffic.  Just goes to show how well-engineered the road is.

The "finest farmland" becoming "finest suburbia" is very true.  It's difficult to tell that the Thruway bypassed Rochester today.  Aside from the lack of exits, it's much like the Thruway in Syracuse.

The Beech Nut sign came down from that (now abandoned) factory in Canajoharie just within the last few weeks.

Beech Nut (part of the international Hero Foods) moved its operation to a new facility near Exit 27 in Amsterdam.
