This is a very exclusive category. The example I have in mind is US 50 in WV. It crosses the following borders: WV/OH, WV/MD (twice), WV/VA. Is there any other route that crosses three different borders out of the same state (or country, if we look internationally)?
Running south from U.S. 50 near Gore, Va. is Va. 259.
It starts in Frederick County, Virginia, enters Hampshire County, W.Va. here (https://maps.google.com/maps?q=39.234148,-78.405359&hl=en&num=1&t=h&z=17).
As the highway heads south in Hampshire County, it never strays especially far from the Commonwealth, running close to the state line for several miles, and I believe the road ducks back into Virginia (though WVDOH retains maintenance) at least once here (https://maps.google.com/maps?q=39.206536,-78.430379&hl=en&num=1&t=h&z=17) and maybe again here (https://maps.google.com/maps?q=39.198771,-78.438039&hl=en&ll=39.198762,-78.438081&spn=0.004648,0.009645&num=1&t=h&z=17).
It then heads deeper into West Virginia, leaving Hampshire County for Hardy County, joining Corridor H for a short distance, then continuing on its own past Lost River, finally leaving West Virginia for Rockingham County, Va. here (https://maps.google.com/maps?q=38.781688,-78.896044&hl=en&ll=38.781722,-78.896041&spn=0.00935,0.01929&num=1&t=h&z=16).
I-86/NY 17 crosses the PA/NY border 3 times: Near it's end toward Erie, then twice near Waverly. US 340 does as well in VA: the VA/MD border just west of the Potomac, the WV/VA border less than a mile later, then the WV/VA border again.
Then there's the case of Md./Del. 54. It starts out in Fenwick Island, Delaware and heads west, entirely in Delaware, but not especially far from Maryland. It eventually runs south to the line, and heads west on top of the border not so far from Willards, Md. here (https://maps.google.com/maps?q=38.452144,-75.393788&hl=en&num=1&t=h&z=16).
A the intersection with Whitesville Road, Md. 54 is completely in Maryland for a short distance here (https://maps.google.com/maps?q=38.451555,-75.418848&hl=en&ll=38.452186,-75.418122&spn=0.001174,0.002411&num=1&t=h&z=19), but it returns to the state line again. Eventually, it arrives at U.S. 13, still straddling the border here (https://maps.google.com/maps?q=38.455546,-75.558248&hl=en&num=1&t=h&z=17). The road continues west through the bistate municipality of Delmar, west of there, it leaves the line, and enters Delaware entirely here (https://maps.google.com/maps?q=38.456244,-75.582315&hl=en&ll=38.45626,-75.582054&spn=0.004696,0.009645&num=1&t=h&gl=us&z=17). It eventually comes back to Maryland near Mardela Springs here (https://maps.google.com/maps?q=38.460058,-75.691491&hl=en&num=1&t=h&gl=us&z=16), where it ends at Md. 313
Those replies are one and two, not three. For three (on a nonbranching route) you need it to exit the state on each end, and dip into another state in the middle.

Cool; that's one border crossed three times. Only need two more borders to go. I'll give you NY/NJ in addition to NY/PA if we can count multi-state routes.
US 460 KY-VA-WV-VA-GOAT.
Continuing on US 50 after it finally leaves WV -- VA/DC and then DC/MD. So you get WV/MD, MD/WV and then several miles on down the road, DC/MD. That's three crossings of the Maryland border.

Well you have WV/MD, MD/WV, but only MD/DC. If US 50 came from VA and somehow hit MD first before entering DC, then you'd have it.
Although a very short route (about 3.7 mi) MA/NH 286 crosses the MA/NH border 3 times, including twice in about a quarter mile.
How about NY 120A? It runs along the border between New York and Connecticut and goes back and forth a couple of times.
US-62 has borders for TX/OK, TX/NM (twice), and TX/Mexico.
US-54 used to do the same, but now it is truncated to just before the Mexico border.

Nope, no go on either of those. They only cross one border, whether they cross it three times or three million times.
Successful candidates will be accompanied by the names of four states (or countries).
Several roads around Baarle-Hertog cross back and forth multiple times between the Netherlands and Belgium. In some cases the border appears to run down the center of the road. The N260 (Netherlands route number) appears, from the map I looked at, to cross back and forth 12 times.
CT/MA/NH/VT 12
US 71 crosses AR/LA, AR/TX, and AR/MO

Yeah.....I think when I posted that I was interpreting each "piece" of Baarle-Hertog (it's a bunch of separate pieces) as a "different border." But as I re-read it this morning I'm not sure.
Does DE-MD-PA 896 count?
Quote from: Laura Bianca on March 11, 2013, 12:43:41 AM
Does DE-MD-PA 896 count?
No, as it only crosses two borders: DE/MD and MD/PA. For it to count, it would have to enter a a fourth state, and it would have to cross MD's border with that state (so that MD is the common state to all three borders).
That's why former PA/NY/NJ 17 doesn't count either: it starts in PA, crosses the border into NY, so that's one border: PA/NY. Then later on it dips back into Pennsylvania at Sayre. That brings our total up to one border: PA/NY. Finally at the end it crosses into NJ, so that makes two borders: PA/NY and NY/NJ. It doesn't win.
(Of course, PA 17 no longer exists in association with this route, but NY 17 does still enter Pennsylvania at Sayre. But that doesn't change its score anyway.)
This seems to one of those topics where it's hard to find answers, not because it's hard to find the answer, but because it's apparently harder still to find the question!

I emailed AHTD and asked them if the current project includes the grading & earthwork to the state line. The response:
Quote
The next phase of work for the Bella Vista Bypass is scheduled to be let in July 2011. That project is for the grading and structures of 4.8 miles from Highway 72 north to the state line
Useless trivia department: When this project begins in late 2011, Arkansas will have ongoing construction projects at three of the four state lines it shares with other states along the route of I-49. At the risk of straying off-topic, a roadgeek challenge: When was the last time in the history of the interstate system, if ever, that one state had simultaneous construction projects at three or more state lines of a single interstate? (I do not have an answer).

Three states (LA, MO, TX), but four state line crossings. There are two proposed state line crossings with Texas
(above quotes from I-49 in AR (Bella Vista, Fort Smith) (https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?topic=3324.msg101507#msg101507) thread)
It looks like Arkansas will miss its chance to become a member of the presumably more exclusive "under construction at three different state lines club". I-49 AR/MO state line construction still has not started, and the AR/TX state line crossing near Texarkana now looks like it will be open to traffic before the AR/MO construction work begins (IIRC the current AR/TX project extends approximately 500 feet into Texas).
edit
Construction on the Arkansas side of the AR/LA state line is currently scheduled to be completed in 2015.
US 212 enters WY three times. It crosses the WY/ MT Line, followed by the MT/ WY Line then hundreds of miles to the east it crosses the MT/ WY Line and finally the WY/ SD Line.

Not enough to count; the first three crossing are the same pair of states (WY/MT), so that's one. Then the last crossing, WY/SD, makes two. From Wyoming, it needs to enter one other state besides Montana and South Dakota, so that you have a
third border: WY/??

By George, that's got it! From Austria, E60 enters three other countries. From Croatia, E65 enters three other countries. And from the Ukraine, E58 enters
four other countries, spectacular!
(At least I assume it is...I only have the Internet here, so I haven't an accurate enough map in front of me to actually follow all those routings!)

I see it now! I was confused by how the states need to be arranged in this.
BTW this really is a brain teaser. It will sure keep us all thinking, but hopefully learning other stuff while we seek I am sure. Good topic, I must confess.
