Title: Routes you've clinched in one sitting

This post from Oscar V. made me think.

Quote from: oscar on April 20, 2013, 08:49:27 PM
Heck, even the short I-66, I never did in a single trip, since I live along the route, and had no occasion to go directly from downtown DC at its east end to Strasburg VA at its west end, or vice versa.

The longest Interstate I might've clinched in a single (multi-day) trip is I-44.  Longer Interstates were clinched in two or more overlapping trips.

What routes have you clinched all at once? For purposes of this discussion, it can mean if you stopped for an overnight stay along the route and then resumed your journey the next morning.

Also for purposes of this discussion, short routes don't count (such as I-471 in KY/OH or I-265 in Indiana).

For me, definitely I-66 and I-68. Also, I-30. Everything else I've clinched has been in bits and pieces.

As far as 2 digit interstates:
I-17, I-19, the west I-76, I-82, the west I-86

As far as actual long routes...gosh, my style of travel doesn't lend itself to doing that very often. Even when I took a trip specifically to clinch Oklahoma SH 3, I detoured off to go to Tulsa to see bugo and then caught back up where I left off the next morning, so I don't know if that counts.

Without leaving the corridor, I guess- US 371 I did in one burst. Several US routes, I guess- 91, 138, 195, 266, 350, 371, 730. Whatever is the longest of those would probably be my longest. I think that's 371.

I'm planning on clinching Alberta 36 in one shot in May (423 miles)- that would be by far my longest once I do that.

That depends on whether it was literally the first time you were ever on that road, or if a later trip after partially clinching it counts.  AFAIK, the only two digit interstate I ever did all at once is the western I-88.  But it wasn't the first time on that road, because when I was a college student at NIU in DeKalb, I made a couple trips to Chicago and I once went west to the Quad Cities, so I had it clinched, but it wasn't all at once, but I did drive it all at once later (after I no longer lived in Illinois).

The same goes for the first (and so far only) US route I drove all at once, US 73 (in its old form, before they rerouted it south to I-70, which begs the question of whether I still have it clinched).  The first time I ever drove on it, I drove it from its north end near Dawson, NE to Horton, KS, where it separates from US 159, but later, I drove it end to end.

On the state route level, there probably are a bunch, but most of them are short spur routes.  Anything lengthy gets broken up.  The longest I did do was the NE 50/K-63 combo.

Looking at my non-Interstate travels, I still think I can't top I-44 (about 630 miles) for longest I clinched in one trip without significant side trips or other detours.  Notable state/provincial routes I've clinched in one trip are the Dempster Highway (YT 5/NT 8), at about 455 miles, and the Dalton Highway (AK 11), at 416 miles (did that in one day, which was a mistake).  Of course, neither of those highways have any significant side roads.  I did the Trans-Labrador Highway (NL 510/NL 500, over 700 miles) in a single multi-day trip, but with some significant detours to St. Lewis (NL 513), Charlotte Harbour (NL 514), Cartwright (NL 516), Goose Bay (NL 500/520), and Wabush (NL 503) along the way.

The longest Interstate I have driven in one sitting is probably I-37 in Texas.  I did most of I-45 in one sitting as well, but by-passed Downtown Houston via I-610 to avoid heavy rush hour traffic.

Need to add two more to my list.

I-59 -- started out in Chattanooga and took detours for I-759 and I-359, but got back on the mainline. Overnighted in Hattiesburg but finished up the trip the next day.

I-88 -- drove from Schenectady to Binghamton in one shot, not even stopping for gas.

Unfortunately, I don't think I can put I-12 on my list. I'd have to go back to my pictures for the Slidell, La. meet a few years ago to double-check, but I don't think I drove it end-to-end in one chunk.

Hadn't thought about the Kentucky parkways, but I have devoured the Mountain, Bluegrass, Western, Cumberland, Audubon and Purchase in one sitting.

There are a number of 3di's that I've done at once, but most are so short that I didn't include them in this category. My most noteworthy of those would be I-495; I drove the entire DC beltway counter-clockwise a few years ago, starting at the I-95 split in Maryland and working all the way back around to, I think, the GW Parkway in Virginia.

I-88 I did in NYS back in 99.
I-37 I did in one day back in 97.
I-66 I did from I-81 to the Roosevelt Bridge almost making its whole run.
I-24 I did twice, but stopped to lodge both times as retiring time came about when I was en route here.  Normally, anyone can do this highway in one day, but started from Orlando, FL both times. 1994 and 2001 were the times.

U.S. 350
I-12
I-27 (with the allowance for an overnight stay along the way)
I-H-2
I-37, if "clinching" means taking it to the last interchange (U.S. 181 in Corpus Christi). I came back later the same trip to drive under those overpasses from the downtown streets.

In other words, nothing spectacular in terms of length.

I-4 and I-68 come to mind.

I-66 does not for the same reason Oscar cites. Likewise, never did it on I-85 because the only times I've driven it beyond Atlanta were when I was at school in Durham, NC, so even when I drove that route from Montgomery to Northern Virginia I stopped in Durham to drop off some stuff and just stayed overnight.

Not going to count 3di routes because that's too easy.

Edited to add: After rereading the OP, I-85 is another I've done in one shot if you count the overnight stop in Durham.

In terms of interstates, I-16, I-68, and I-88 (NY) particularly come to mind. Although none were pure straight shots as all involved one stop (the former two for gas, the latter for food).

Also worth mentioning: last summer when I did my big cross country road trip I took I-70 straight through from exit 219 in Ohio to exit 182 in Utah with only necessary stops and meeting a friend for breakfast in Denver as deviation - 1,709 miles, although not the whole route.

I-68 (and before that, the old U.S. 48)
I-97 (more times than I care to admit)
I-270 (Md.)
I-295/D.C. 295/Md. 201/B-W Parkway/Md. 295 (counted as one route because many  people consider it that way)
I-395 (Va. and D.C.)
I-895 (Md.)
U.S. 211
Md. 3
I-370/Md. 200 (though Md. 200 is not yet completed)
Va. 267

I was trying to think about US routes, and had forgotten about US 211. I got that in one day a couple of years ago. I also could have counted US 48 in that list until the section from Knobley Road to WV 93 opened last year. But once the whole thing is done I'm sure I will have occasion to drive it all in one chunk again.

I've never driven on I-97, although I have been past both ends.

But I did do I-99 in one excursion, although I did take one exit to go grab a county and another for a Sheetz stop. So that's another one to add to my list.

The major part of the Mackenzie Highway, from the southern end to where the Yellowknife Highway turns off.
Very nearly all of I-84 western, having turned off at I-205 (Oregon).
I-5 from Bellingham to Dunnigan, more times than I want to think about.
I-80 from Chicago to San Francisco.
I-40 from Barstow to Oklahoma.
CA-1
US-101 from San Francisco to L.A.

I do not know if this counts, but back in the 70's when I-78 did not have all of its segments completed, I did travel from present day Exit 41 in Watchung, NJ to Exit 3 near Phillipsburg, NJ as well as from Fogelsville, PA to its western terminus in one shot.  We used to go to Hersheypark every year and would use that particular route.

Back in those days, Exit 41 at Drift Road in Watchung was the eastern terminus as all points east (except the NJ Turnpike) were not constructed in addition to the Allentown section that had the gap from west of the old Schaefer Brewery to Exit 3 in Greenwich, NJ where you had to use US 22 between those points. until 1990.  In retrospect, that was I-78 as being orphaned from the rest of the system, you could not count the Newark Bay Extension as I-78 and the NJTA did not even sign it until the section from Newark to Union opened later in the 1970's.

I-88 in Illinois is the only one I've clinched at one time.

For I-66 I never did the segment inside the beltway at the same time as the rest.  For I-30 I missed the part west of I-35W.  I've done some very, very long chunks of 65, 70, 80, 90, and 94 at once but not clinched.

No US highways clinched in their entirety in one trip, though I have done the entire Indiana section of US 31 at one time.

without even stopping for gas?  probably about 340 miles of I-10 in west Texas.  I may have even had cruise control on 84mph the whole way.

for entire routes, I think the longest on one tank of gas is probably CA-62.  that's only about 150 miles, though.

I did I-40 once but took two rest breaks, countless gas stops, etc.

Criteria were not very clear.  If you can get off the highway to sleep for one night at someplace adjoining, how about for two nights as long as you stay within sight of the highway?  Obviously I didn't do all of those in one day.

My interpretation of the OP's criteria is that you can stop to use the bathroom, eat, get gas, or sleep, so the trip could last for a few days and still count, but you mentioned two nights in the same place.  If there was a day of tourism, visiting relatives, etc., then I would count it as two separate trips and not one.

No, I would count this as an all-at-once clinch. Say you hit I-68 at Morgantown and drive to Cumberland, and stay two nights. Then you get back on at the same exit and continue east to Hancock. That's one trip.

I almost got eastern I-84 a few years ago, all but a bit on the west side of Hartford CT.

2-digit Interstate segments by state:
39 IL
70 IL, IN
71 KY
75 KY
77 VA
80 NE
84 PA, NY, MA
90 WI, IL
95 GA, NH

Other:
I-271 Cleveland
I-470 Wheeling
I-670 Columbus many times
OH 315 a few times

I should note that I don't usually go out of my way to clinch routes or counties.  Also, a couple of the items I listed were achieved as a young passenger on a family road trip, though there are probably more of those I can't remember at the moment.

I-82 gets clinched a lot at once, probably the western I-76 and the western I-88 too. Same with I-17. I-19 a bit less so since a big chunk of the traffic gets off to take SR 189 to Mexico.

Late edit: Actually, probably not I-17 and maybe not 76. But I-82 definitely gets clinched a lot at once and I'd bet the western I-88 does too.

I think most folks are setting the bar wherever they need to so they can post something.
I wonder which road is most clinched in a single sitting of viable length. I-97 just seems too short. NJ Turnpike, Balto-Wash Parkway, Atlantic City Expwy...

Depending on how you define "viable length," I have to think it'd be a relatively urban/suburban route with a lot of commuter traffic (which includes the BW Parkway). I've never been to California and so don't know their roads, but might their Route 91 be a strong possibility?

BTW, I'm interpreting "clinched" as meaning by the general population, not just by road aficionados.

Atlantic City Expressway is the most likely candidate I can think of.

The Turnpike handles more traffic and the amount going straight from 1 to 18E or 18W is probably not insignificant, but it is impossible to clinch the entire Turnpike in one shot because you have the eastern/western spur split, plus the Newark Bay and PA Turnpike extensions. It's three trips at minimum for everything.

Also, does it count if you stop at a service plaza? If not then that kills a lot of trips even if we go with just the mainline.

Service plazas absolutely count, and I'm not looking at split mainlines as part of this issue as long as they come back together.

I-68, perhaps? Or maybe I-271 in Ohio. Come to think of it, I clinched that route in one sitting a few years ago.

Is 46 miles long enough?  Beats the pants off I-97 anyway.

Actually, I just remembered a time when I did a lap (55 miles) around Columbus on I-270.  I was taking notes on lane counts while a friend drove – this was before aerial imagery of sufficient resolution readily available.  Made one stop for coffee.  (Even a 40 minute ride with coffee drinkers seems to require a stop for more coffee somewhere along the way...)

I don't think that one is a good example.  I would think most people from Riverside go to beaches that are a lot closer than Hemoso Beach or Manhattan Beach.  Especially since the last part of Route 91 is not freeway.

First clinched on an end-to-end trip: I-91, Garden State Parkway (over two days but without backtracking), NY 9N, A-13, A-19, Taconic State Pkwy, New Jersey Tpk, 407 ETR, A-640, Palisades Interstate Pkwy, Lake Ontario State Pkwy, Sprain Brook Pkwy, ON 34, I-787 (not counting the toll booth for thruway), I-264, A-720

There might be others but they're not coming to my mind.

the only time I've ever driven the southernmost section of I-17, between the two I-10 junctions, is when I clinched it in 2003 as a straight shot without stopping.  apart from that, I have never been on that section of I-17 since.

I once did I-30 all the way from I-40 to I-20 in nearly one shot, stopping only for gas about 20 miles past Texarkana and getting back on at the same exit.  TX-8 in New Boston, IIRC.

30 and 17 were the first interstates I ever clinched - I went from having 0 miles driven on either, to completing both, in two straight shots.

I-355 : Went from one family party to another, took that entire route.
I-294 : Clinched 95th to Wisconsin going to Milwaukee, got 95th to Indiana done going to Michigan
I-190 : Did the full loop 3 times going into O'Hare waiting to pick someone up
I-290 : Did I-294 to 90 to visit my cousins in the Northwest burbs, 294 to Congress multiple times going to/from Chi Loop.

One of these nights I wanna do a full loop of every expressway in Chicago in one sitting, non-rush hour of course

Interstate:
Completed in one trip: 68, 85, 87, 88, 97, 99

Honorable mention: 84. Haha on the way to the Portsmouth meet, Mike and I got off at US-6 so that we could drive into Rhode Island (and count it as part of our "50 states as a couple" clinch. We hit the remainder of 84 the next night on the way back.

US Highways:
Completed in one trip: US-211

Honorable mention: US-340. I had set to complete this all in one trip but forgot the piece below I-64. Failboat.

But I did do I-99 in one excursion, although I did take one exit to go grab a county...

Huntington County, right? Did the same thing, since it was perhaps 3 minutes away...caught the first mile or so of I-99 the day before I logged everything after Exit 1 to its northern terminus.

Looking back, with the exception of a dozen or so 3di's, I've never clinched anything of serious length in one go (maybe I-95 within the boundardies of a few states). Maybe a handful of short state/county roads, but nothing like the distance of a entire US Route or Interstate. I tend to wander, and save clinching for later.

2di Interstates clinched all at once: 12, 17, 27, 30, 59, 68, 97, 99
US routes clinched all at once: 11W, 46, 48, 130, 163, 176, 178, 211, US 422 eastern segment

In early August I am hoping to do US 4 and eastern I-88 all at once.

I have twice taken a trip to a city and clinched a route one direction from the city, then drove the other direction on the rest of the route to head home: Tallahassse US 319; Providence US 44

I have driven hundreds of state routes in their entirety all at once.  Off the top of my head the longest ones I've done all at once are GA 1 and VA 3.

My top route to fit this thread is definitely the Alaska Highway, if it counts.  And that's what I think of as a "natural clinch" - when I've never been on a road at the start of the ride and have clinched the highway when I'm done.  If, not, I can at least claim YT 1.

In thinking about other possibilities, I expected there to be more, but it seems that I rarely travel significantly long highways from end to end.  I've definitely done US 163 and US 199 (both natural clinches, I believe, and sadly the only US highways I've got clinched at all).  I may have driven I-12, I-17, and the original Louisiana I-49 end to end, but maybe not.  I have done I-88 (eastern).  I think my longest is I-24.

('US') 8, 141.
('state' roads of appreciable length) WI 21, 26, 33, 44, 131.
(other lengthy roads) Blue Ridge Parkway/Skyline Drive.
