This my friends, is how LED lighting should be done. For some reason, current LED streetlights tend to have poor lighting -- as they only really light things directly below them. Even the HPS non-cutout has more light area. Having it aim behind you also is a plus; however, I can see potential problems with mirrors if the intensity is too high.
On a slightly unrelated note, the sign gantry on the new span of the Bay Bridge is significantly different than California's standard gantry.
Awesome to see the Musco Lighting name out there. They have been known for 20 years for their lighting at motorsports facilities (Charlotte Motor Speedway, Daytona International Speedway, Phoenix International Raceway, and many more). Their way of directing the light specifically to keep it out of drivers eyes comes directly from their experience in motorsports. In that application, they use mirrors to reflect the lighting from the light poles back onto the track from the inside and directed from behind the drivers, not in front. You don't have to go much more than a couple minutes into this video to see how they do it, but for any NASCAR fans, it's a good opportunity to share an awesome race from Youtube.

I love the way the lights are situated behind the driver, to eliminate glare, but still keep the road lit well.
