Title: US 66 Will County, IL
Post by: rmsandw on May 03, 2013, 08:35:38 PM
When US 66 was moved west of Joliet...how was the original section signed.  I have seen maps and read books that have called in ALT. U.S. 66 and some that call it U.S. 66A...but can't seem to find a picture of how it was signed.  So the question...anyone remember how it was in the field  "ALT" or "A"...

I don't know how it was signed, but I do know that maps and road guides sometimes used the "xxA" thing regardless of how it was signed on the ground -- the "xxA" takes less space than "ALT xx".

I am guessing ALTERNATE 66. But you could always bounce your question to the 66 Yahoo groups route66@yahoogroups.com  and ask there

Unfortunately, US 66 for all tense and purposes was gone by the time I moved to Bolingbrook in 1980. However, I do remember having gone through some phone books from that time period that had the city maps of Bolingbrook still indicating US 66 from Joliet Rd (formerly Exit 269, now Exit 268) east on I-55. There was no mention of "Alternate 66" even though it did exist not to much prior to when I moved here.

Alt 66 was gone by 1980 (when I moved here as well, coincidentally).  I think it was replaced by IL-53 sometime in the 1960s.

There are maps that I have seen that call what is now IL 53, ALT U.S. 66...but in "The Braidwood Story", the history of the City of Braidwood 1860-1957 it does refer to the city having U.S. 66 and U.S. 66A.
