Title: New NYSDOT signs headed to Amsterdam
Post by: machias on May 14, 2013, 09:37:03 PM
I just spotted a truck loaded with signs for Amsterdam, N.Y. in a sign yard near Utica.  While there were five or six signs on the truck, I could only see the first one. Unfortunately I couldn't get too close to grab a picture, but what I saw looked like this:

Yes, the arrow is accurately placed from what I observed.  It looks like Region 2 is still doing their own brand of sign engineering.  Sigh.  I have asked Region 2 repeatedly as to why they list the auxiliary routes first and they always tell me that that's the way it's suppose to be done. Apparently the rest of the United States has it wrong.

If you're in the Amsterdam area, watch for these signs to go up in a week or so, most likely in the downtown area.

What also bothers me is NYSDOT's practice of providing a "TO" banner with every shield.  "TO (shield shield shield)" on one line should be sufficient, especially if the information is placed beneath the primary information and above the directional arrow.

I agree, it is just as easily understandable if there is one TO in the middle of 3 shields. Looks a lot better too.

Except "TO" shields in NY aren't placed beneath the primary information - they're placed in line with the other shields.  Region 2 over-uses the word though - I suspect they don't know what a freeway is and treat the ramps as regular one-way roads.

I agree that a TO for each marker is overkill. Outside of Region 2 I've seen a mixed bag of the placement of the word "To", but usually it's to the left of the marker AFTER the primary route.

(690) WEST  To (90) (Thruway)
Baldwinsville

That sort of thing.

The MUD Project in the late 80s (rebuilding of Interstate 790, etc.) had the "To" routes placed in the same way that the other NYSDOT regions (and the rest of the country) do it, but it changed with sign rehabs in the mid 1990s. Apparently, the engineer that makes these decisions was hired in the mid 90s and has never traveled outside of Region 2.

When I interviewed with NYSDOT a few years ago I was careful not to criticize the practices in R2, but I did mention where I thought I could contribute enhancements to the area.  I guess that's why I wasn't brought on board.

Region 2's use of "TO" makes the signs more difficult to read, imo. A great example of the overuse of "TO" is on 790 headed toward downtown Utica. "TO 5 - TO 8 - TO 12."

It looks like they are getting ready to replace the overhead sign ahead of Burrstone Rd on the Arterial SB.  Watching with interest the progress on site prep for the new Arterial.
