Title: Bridge Construction Signs for River Traffic
Post by: Revive 755 on May 15, 2013, 10:38:30 PM
I recently spoke with a consulting engineer whose bridge project was going to provide 'road construction ahead' signs for recreational boat traffic on a river.  Has anyone seen/heard of this being done elsewhere?

[This topic might be better in some other area of the forum]

Wouldn't that be 'river construction ahead'? Road construction ahead signs are used when a railroad is doing work on a bridge over a road.

I've seen river traffic signs warning of low-head dams, but not bridge construction...

Construction warning signs for river traffic are used quite extensively on PennDOT bridge replacement projects, but no standard detail is (yet) available for them--hence, river traffic signing is often the only designable element in PennDOT traffic control plans.  Florida also has a sign (which has been standardized in some FDOT districts) asking boaters to limit their speed to an idle for the benefit of manatees.

JN Winkler: Would you be willing to share examples of specs?

Here you go:

*  Florida DOT (from a plans set for replacement of a state highway bridge over the Santa Fe River in District 2):

*  PennDOT (these signs are typical of those used on literally dozens of PennDOT bridge replacement jobs):

*  PennDOT again (portage warning signs are fairly unusual):
