Title: NY 25C shields on Union Turnpike
Post by: dgolub on May 30, 2013, 06:31:20 PM
This past weekend, I was travelling along the section of Union Turnpike in Nassau County that has NY 25C reference markers and a reference route number of 900F.  I noticed that they installed an EAST NY 25C shield just east of Lakeville Road (CR 11).  Does anyone know what's going on here?  I contacted Michael Fay at NYSDOT, who told me that NY 25C has not been re-established as a touring route and that he had contacted the Region 10 office and been told that they had no idea why it was installed.  I'm guessing that someone just make an error, but does anyone know anything?

I'd guess it's an error.

but why the reference markers of 25C, and the reference number of 900F?  why two reference keys?

Until 1970, NY 25 followed Union Turnpike between Queens Boulevard and Springfield Boulevard, and the portion of Union Turnpike and Marcus Avenue east of there was designated NY 25C.  When NY 25 was moved from Union Turnpike to Hillside Avenue, NY 25C got decommissioned, except for that short piece of Union Turnpike in Nassau County, which kept its NY 25C reference markers and got a reference route number of 900F.

This happens in other places in New York as well.  There's a portion of Montauk Highway that's an unsigned state route with NY 27A reference markers and a reference route of 900W.

NY often keeps old routes listed on reference markers rather than change their internal records.

Reference markers are intended more to locate a specific point on the highway network than to actually identify the highway. Of course, the highway's posted or secret number is used to devise the marker's legend, but if that number changes it makes some sense not to change the marker, since now you'd have two different marker legends on record for a single unique point, thus defeating its purpose somewhat.

(And wasn't there another recent thread about NY 25C?)

I'd be far too optimistic if I thought NYSDOT was going to run it from NY 25 in Kew Gardens to NY 25 in Garden City Park.

It would be cool if they did, though.

Since it's clearly incorrect, I think it behooves the road community to correct the error. It looks great on your wall already.
