this a replacement for the N "guess that X" threads ... road, bridge, stop sign, overpass, aerial map, municipal meeting minute, etc etc.
Rules are: post a photo and identify what needs to be guessed. I will start. Give me the name of the road from which the photo is taken! The bridge is easy to guess... but where was I standing when I took the photo??
Yerba Buena Island?
the road, please! yes, it's on Yerba Buena Island.
I remember when you posted that photo I looked up the island to see where it may have been taken. Looking at a map is cheating so I won't guess but I'd be interested to know where it was taken. I would think that you were more toward the center of the island than the photo would indicate.
Interstate 80 the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge from Yuerba Buena Island. Looking west!
yep, which street? it's a very distinct view.
ever notice how damn near every Bay Bridge photo is taken from one of about 3 vantage points? that's because most of Yerba Buena island is covered with ... yerbas. Buena ones for sure, but they obstruct the vision nicely.
To merge the old games into one thread, and to resurrect a fun one, I'll start the guess the infrastructure game once again. The rules are that only roads, tunnels, and bridges, or any scenes including one of them can be posted in this thread. Anything else goes in the off topic forum.
To start, here's a nice tunnel. I want to know what town and county its in, and what roads travel along it.
(https://www.aaroads.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm4.static.flickr.com%2F3171%2F2952414080_86bb029f95.jpg%3Fv%3D0&hash=391078e839e3094e6e01319618fb455931f35bbd)
Does the tunnel carry an interstate highway?
Well, assuming that the driver is the photographer he is driving on the left. The road markings are Western Europe, meaning that the tunnel is either in the UK or Ireland. It's a two-lane road so its probably an A road rather than a multi-lane Motorway.
So: Is this a tunnel in the United Kingdom on an A-road?
Yes, austrini
OK so the criteria is: two lanes, post WW2 (because its concrete and not brick), bored (because is round, cut and cover tunnels are usually square), and on an A-road. That leaves two possibilities.
Cuilfail Tunnel, Lewes, East Sussex A26 -or-
Saltash Tunnel, Saltash, Cornwall A38
Is it one of those two?
Dartford crossing? (gap in the M25)
we need precisely one "guess the infrastructure" game! :P

Fair enough :colorful:
austrini got it with the Cuilfail Tunnel
Figuring out where things are is the only thing I'm good at. That and using chopsticks.
*bow*
The photographer could easily have been a passenger in a LHD car in a country where traffic circulates on the right. Nor does the picture show that the tunnel carries two-way traffic. In the US double white stripes are used in tunnels (e.g. the Fort McHenry Tunnel) to discourage lane changing.
There are other post-1945 bored A-road tunnels in the UK, including some of the tunnels on the A55 in North Wales.
All in all, the guesses were either lucky or made use of additional information, e.g. detailing of the tunnel finish.
Way to rain on a guy's parade, man.
Not the intention at all! It is still remarkable to find the correct tunnel out of the multitude of possible choices in multiple countries.
Well, I just used the list on Wikipedia.
All the others on there were either A(M) or were not listed (the ones in Wales)
Anyway, austrini, it's now your turn to post an image.
OK, I guess this will be either really easy or really difficult... I admit to being bad at this.

Zakim Bridge, Big Dig, Boston?
no sir
Is it the Industrial Ring Road Bridge in Bangkok, Thailand?
Indeed it is, I wish I could give you a prize.

Ok.. What street does the overpass carry?

OK. A wild guess here. Is the picture from Houston, TX?
technically no.

I gonna say the ramps are for I-10/I-610 New Orleans area.
BUZZ! Wrong
East of the Mississippi?
Yeah, you can say it's east of the Mississippi
*hint* (Technically it is North of the Mississippi)
Is it in Louisiana?
That would be correct
I figured froggie or aaroads would get
I was gonna venture to guess the new ramps at Causeway and I-10!
New Mexico?
U.S. 191 in southeastern Utah?
I'll take a stab: NM 80 southbound out of Lordsburg, Animas Mountains off to the left.
US 54 out of Tucumcari?
1. Its rude to say "fail" like that to someone, it discourages future parcipitation.
2. US 64 west of Shiprock, Carrizo Mountains. I've been that way several times.
That was a tough one, btw!

Why is that?

Indeed it was. US 64 was actually one possibility I considered, but I rejected it because I remembered it as a series of summits peeking over valleys. Obviously I should have given it a closer examination in StreetView (which has decent coverage in rural New Mexico and confirms that it is, indeed, US 64). So, congratulations!
It's all right--it just wasn't clear what was going on.
I'm awaiting the next photo but am not staking any hopes on it since I suspect I have the opposite of Justin's talent for WAIs.
You just have to stare at it for a while, you'll find something. Vegetation, road markings, sun angle, stuff like that.
Would it be I-20/59?
if not is it south of the M-D line?
Was this photo taken in Wisconsin?
Is this one of the Northeast states? (PA/NJ/NY and New England)
is it a multiplex of 2 interstates?
South Carolina?
Texas?
Ohio?

this is idiotic. It could be anywhere, and frankly it does not matter where. It's just a stretch of freeway, damn near identical to about 90% of the stretches of freeway in the world.
Here, have something distinctive. New game, one that likely will not descend into the equivalent of "what number am I thinking of?"

I am willing to bet, then, that all significance has been edited out by the blanking of the green signs.
i-29?
almost. you can see I-29 in that photo if you squint, but the bridge itself isn't I-29.

US-72 in Alabama?
Is it near spartanburg?
Nah, not even close
I'd like to guess that it is US-501 somewhere between Marion and Myrtle Beach, SC.
thenetwork has gotten it.
Bonus points: What town exactly?
I am going to say Conway, SC east of US-701. Is that per chance the intersection which leads to some sort of (Community) college or school?
Though I have probably only been down that stretch of road maybe 4 or 5 times in my entire life (back in the days when I lived in Ohio and went vacationing to Myrtle Beach -- the last time was over 8 years ago), the traffic lights looked like a SC set-up, with the little circle loops of wire on either side of the lights, the shoulders were grass right up to the pavement (another SC hwy characteristic), and I remember that specific high-tension powerline design (the 2nd string from the left) running along the south side of US-501 between Conway and the outlet shops next to the Intercoastal Waterway.
Holy crap, I have passed the ultimate test of road-geekdom!! Not only that, I'm 42 and I STILL have some working brain cells in the far reaches of my mind.

How about CO-470 near the Denver Airport.
Even COLDER.
And actually all of 470 east of I-25 is E-470. which just went cashless today (7/4). All tolls are via transponders or license plate photos.

We have a WINNER. It is Westbound I-70 at the western end of C-470 (Exit 260).
This is usually the area in which the REAL Denver weather begins. On this particular day, going up the hogbacks up to Genesee, you went from just overcast skies to heavy fog in just a matter of minutes. In winter, this is where inches of snowfall turn to feet in a matter of a mile or two. In fact, it was a little more than one week prior where this area had 2 to 3 FEET of snow in one fell swoop.
Here is proof of the accuracy of the VMS:

this is not the point of the game. the most specific grain of dust on the planet can be precisely located within 30 or 31 guesses. our endeavor is not to imitate the banality of machine reasoning.
game over. original poster, find something else. Truvelo, find something else.

But that would give it away
the point of the game to make it sufficiently easy to guess that no blanking is necessary - while sufficiently difficult to guess that it remains a challenge. Find a freeway that is distinct enough that it can be identified even in the absence of any green signs at all, so that none may need to be erased.

It will still come down to either you know it or you don't and people will begin guessing.
Annunciaton got it
Perhaps the random guessing of states should be eliminated. There would be very few freeways that could be identified in the complete absence of green signs. I propose that in future installments the state/province/country the image is in should be given in the post or easy to figure out from the sign. Also, the green-out should be restrained. I don't believe it should be eliminated, but perhaps only text and numbers should be taken out, and not route shields. So you would see the shield and would know what types of routes are listed on the sign.
The might make it so that it isn't super-easy for those familiar with the area the image is from but still acceptable to the site staff.
^^ I just guessed Texas because the bridges in Truvelo's image looked like ones I've seen in Texas images.
