Title: Street View Mistakes
Post by: Signal on June 29, 2013, 10:57:59 PM
LEAF ON LENS!
Richmond, VA: throughout the "route" below, highlighted in blue, the google maps car had a leaf on the camera lens!:

Here is the leaf: http://goo.gl/maps/N9efh

TILTED CAMERA
This one really annoyed me. It was tilted all over Virginia City. Hear is one spot:

In Herkimer, NY the street view doesn't match the area of the street google puts it on.

The corner of Briggs Road and Mission Rock Road in Santa Paula, CA has a man looking straight into the camera.

Also, the portion of I-5 between CA 134 and the East L.A. Interchange has a tilted camera view.

Most Street View mistakes I see are when the camera seems to either be on the fritz or blocked by something causing no picture to appear.

If I punch in my address, it shows my next-door neighbor's house. I'm fine with that mistake.

Please remove your search result from the map before generating a Google Maps link.  If I were using the Google Maps app for Android, or the Google Maps "mobile" web interface, I'd only see the marker for the thing you searched for, not the street view image you meant to share.  More info: https://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?topic=5716.0

But yeah, that's the worst example of tilted camera I've seen yet.  I wonder if they whacked into a fixed object with it or something...

and yeah, I would have never figured out that that was Mission Rock Road.  because... it isn't.

I didn't make an issue of it because I've never been there, and I doubt I will ever go there, and so I don't know whether the map is accurate or what. I saw the street sign there, but I also noted that Pinkerton Road branches off to become a gravel road that looked like it wasn't open to the public, so I didn't know whether using the name "Mission Rock Road" might be the local custom even if the "official" (I hate that word) name might be something else. Essentially I just searched for "Briggs Road, Santa Paula, CA," and then found the closest spot that seemed like it'd fit, and there was the face.

I am only glad I saw that during the afternoon instead of at night.  :ded:  That's creepy and it looks set up like the guy planned to do it.

Yeah, I should have clarified.  Mission Rock begins at the southernmost end of Briggs Road.  Pinkerton Road begins where Mission Rock turns southward towards all the auto junkyards.

Looking somewhere in NY for a photo I had taken, I was sure I'd found the right intersection, but couldn't see the sign at all on the map. It soon occurred to me that I was positioned at the south end of a bridge, but the street view had a freeway overhead - at the north end of the bridge! Luckily the sign I was looking for was within the range of photos posted to the site, but what if I wanted to go to the south end of the road? I'd have ended up 500 feet into the trees.

Hmmm. I thought it was the guy standing outside another car if you back up one frame (to the southwest), but the clothes (and image date) are different. So it could be. Still creepy as hell.

I've seen that sort of thing in quite a few places and it's weird. I've always wondered what caused that.

Same here.  I'm pretty sure the street view cameras are high enough that you physically have to climb on top of the car in order to stare into the camera like that.

What's even weirder is that it covers both sides of the interstate. I've seen a few places where there were blank images on one side of a 4 lane highway but not the other.

I am sad to discover that they have gone back and re-shot West Virginia Route 39 in Gauley Bridge.  For several years, there was an excellent series of shots of a police car on the side of the road whose interest was aroused by the passing Google car, with it then pulling out, lights ablaze, until finally the Google car was pulled over some distance down the road.  It was fun watching the story unfold frame by frame as you moved on down the road.  Kind of like an Internet filmstrip.

If you're trying to collect imagery of the road, it doesn't help to follow directly behind a large truck.

Post by: vtk on July 09, 2013, 10:44:17 AM
Traffic may have been stopped in that one shot, but still, it's not a very useful view of the road.  Even in other spots along the street, the truck isn't that much farther away.  The GSV car should, considering its mission of acquiring useful imagery of the road and surrounding scenery, leave a much greater following distance between itself and a view-obstructing vehicle.  If another vehicle decides to fill the vacuum, that's fine as long as said vehicle is not another large opaque truck.
