Title: Interstate 64 Weather Related Closings at Afton Mountian
Post by: sl on July 01, 2013, 02:15:44 PM
Does anyone know any historical data regarding when Interstate 64 has been closed due to snow in the past.  I have only been able to find mention of it being closed due to dense fog but nothing specific related to snow or ice conditions.
I have a request into VDOT to see if they have any data but I am under the gun to include this information in a presentation and I suspect I won't hear back in time.
Any ideas where I could find this information on line?

It appears this happened in 2005 - http://www.easternuswx.com/bb/index.php?/topic/15502-i-64-closed-from-afton-mtn-to-staunton/

and Jan 2009 - http://www.virginiadot.org/newsroom/staunton/2009/i-64_reopened_over_afton37986.asp

I'm certain this has happened more than these two examples...

Did you contact VDOT itself or the VDOT mainenance folks who cover Afton Mtn?

Other possibilities would be the newspapers in Charlottesville or Waynesboro...
