Historic Road trip - 2015
« on: January 14, 2014, 11:08:58 AM »

My sisters and I are planning a road trip for next year to recreate a trip my granddad took in 1922 from NC to LA and back.   He journal'd the entire trip with pictures and I'm putting together a book, once I get all the information.

I'm trying to keep our route as close to the route he took and I'm really confused in Kansas.  It seems there were several National Roads in Kansas that overlapped.  He mentions that he takes the Union Pacific Hwy from Kansas City to Denver.   But I can find little on the Union Pacific highway route.

I do know he went thru Kanopolis, Kit Carson Co, and Deer Trail before hitting Denver.

What I would like to know are what are the roads we should take that most likely recreate his route.  It looks like it might be old US 40 but.......

I guess a lot of my confusion is there is so little info on the Union Pacific Hwy but there also seems to be the National Old Trail and Midland Tail that cover part of the route.

Does anyone have any good information about the Union Pacific Hwy?

thanks for any help

The UP Highway is old US 40.

The links on http://www.aaroads.com/forum/index.php?topic=5112 might also help.

That sounds like a neat trip.  Retracing a relatives trip from years ago. I like it. Good luck. It will be fun.

I sort of have tried to do something similar. My grandparents owned an interstate trucking company (started in 1934 closed in the 80s).  My dad and several uncles plus family friends drove for them back in the 30s, 40s, and 50s.  I know US 50 and US 66 were their main routes. I have hit all possible of 66. So I am now trying to cover all of US 50. I have hit most of 50 and over half by motorcycle. I try to find the old alignments where I can.
