The Wienermobile in 2019
« on: March 09, 2019, 11:44:45 PM »

If the concept of the Wienermobile were invented today, in 2019, do you think they could get away with naming it that? Or would Oscar Mayer be endlessly mocked and ridiculed for such a silly name?

More broadly, are there other things that were invented and/or named in a previous era that would get mocked if they were invented today?

Boner used to be a common term for a gaffe or error in decades past, while today itís slang for an erection.

Dude, the name Wienermobile was funny 40 years ago as wiener still meant the same thing back then.

And it was slang for an erection even then.

Sure, but did people really think about it that way? Discuss it that way? Imagine if it were introduced in the era of social media.

Uh, yeah.  We made wiener jokes as kids.  People did discuss things and make jokes prior to social media.

The Wienermobile is even older than that. The first one was created in 1936.

And the use of wiener as a slang term for the penis goes back to about 1910.

This while the word 'wiener' itself comes from 'Wien', the German-language way of saying 'Vienna', as in the major city in Austria (they are also sold as 'Vienna Dogs' by competitors, for example).  The same thing as with 'hamburger', for the city of Hamburg in Germany; 'frankfurter' (Frankfort um Main, Germany); 'Limburger' cheese (Limburg, Germany); the Rottweiler breed of dogs (Rottweil, Germany); etc.

It's part of the nature of the German language.

Is there a difference between a wiener and a frankfurter? I always thought they were one and the same.
