When I get a full tank of gas for my truck, I "pack" it too, rounding up to the next even-numbered dollar amount after the pump clicks off. As a result, the needle moves past 'F,' and I can drive for 50 to 60 miles before the needle starts to move away. What's interesting is, once the needle starts moving, it moves pretty rapidly down to about five eighths of a tank, and then very slowly between five eighths and three eighths. When it drops down to one eighth of a tank, I know I have about 50 to 60 miles left before I run out of gas. If I see it dip below 'E,' then I know that I better find the nearest gas station.

My truck has a 20-gallon gas tank, and I typically get about 320 miles per tank, which means I get about 16 MPG in mixed city/highway driving.
