Here are some photos taken today of the reconstruction of the I-405/CA 22(east) and I-405/I-605/CA 22(west) interchanges to add carpool connectors.

Westbound CA 22 at I-405, I think the bridge may be a new Valley View St overpass.

The westbound CA22 exit from NB 405 was rebuilt, note the wall detail.

I-405/605 carpool construction from northbound I-405.

New I-405/605 carpool connector.

Northbound I-405 at I-605.

New pavement work, southbound I-605 at I-405.

Southbound I-605 at I-405.

Southbound I-605 over I-405.

Transition SB 605 to SB 405.

Carpool connector over I-405.

Coming on to southbound I-405.

Rebuilt westbound CA 22 ramp from southbound I-405.

Rebuilt Seal Beach Blvd overpass from SB 405.

Irvine has been added as a control city for SB 405, also, CA is now using a larger font for the first letter of the direction.

Carpool connector construction, southbound I-405 at eastbound CA 22.
At the right is the reconstructed eastbound CA 22 exit, the old (removed) one was to the left of this new one.

Rebuilt eastbound CA 22 exit over southbound I-405.

Funky wall detail on the exit to CA-22 West.

They built a really cool textured retaining wall on the 405 Sepulveda Pass project as well.

Thanks, Mark for sharing these. So much has changed in that area that my photos are obsolete!

I note that they show an I-405 exit number for Exit 21, Jct. California 22 and a California 22 exit number for Exit 5. I guess that's permissible, but it is a little bit confusing (considering I-405's Exit 5 is some distance south of there).

Does Irvine count as a true control city for I-405, or is it more like a destination city that is not approved by AASHTO?

Maybe it is like the Anaheim / Riverside control cities on northbound CA 55.  The city at the end of the route is used in both cases.  Irvine is also used as a control city on the southbound CA 261 exit from CA 241.

I was through there myself at Christmastime. It's changed quite a bit since then. I think carpool-lane to carpool-lane connectors are a big waste of money when there are plenty of freeways in the area that need widening, new paving and so forth.
