So, I recently purchased a suction cup to mount my camera to the dashboard on a car.  The only problem is that my camera can't be set to shoot automatically for an extended period of time.  Ideally, I'd like to get something that I can set to shoot automatically every 10-20 seconds and just leave it to run on auto-pilot for an hour while I drive.  I know that GoPro makes cameras that do that, but they are expensive, costing $300+.  Does anyone know of any cheaper cameras where I can do that and that focus well while in motion?  Alternatively, does anyone know of any good and reasonably priced still cameras that I plug into a USB port and trigger from a computer?  If so, then I could write my own software to trigger it periodically.

If you don't need GPS, the original Garmin VIRB is on Amazon dirt cheap ($120ish) and will do interval photography. The Elite model with GPS is now around $200 as Garmin's getting ready to release the fancier VIRB X/XE models. You'll also need a tripod-to-Virb mount adapter ($10ish) and a good-sized microSD card.

That said you're going to miss a lot at highway speeds if you only take photos every 10 seconds. The current VIRBs' minimum time lapse rate, 2 seconds, is even pushing it.

Yes, this certainly looks like it does the trick.  I just placed an order.

I have a GoPro Hero 4 and its takes great video and will do so for about 2 hours with a 32GB SD card. Yeah it was a little pricey, but I think it was well worth it. I haven't tried the burst mode yet, but I am really digging the HD video it takes.

I am still learning how to edit the videos (I am technologically challenged, lol) or I'd post a couple from some recent road trips I have taken.
