NCDOT has advertised a US 264 pavement rehabilitation project west of I-95. This, however, does not mean I-587 will be signed soon. The project is just for Wilson County, running from MP 14 to 18. There is currently no funded projects to improve the remaining 14 miles to US 64 in Zebulon. Unlike the recent I-87 rehab project in Wake and Franklin Counties (which NCDOT advertised again this month, but from looking at the sign plans, it appears there are no changes made from the first posting), there are no related sign changes, it probably does not make sense to do that until the entire segment is upgraded, but it appears it does include constructing 10 foot paved right shoulders (after removing the existing 4 foot ones):

The project will be let in March.

Why is NCDOT being so inconsistent about this?  They should be doing that for all projects of this type where it's needed on future interstate corridors.  And if they want to cry poverty, then they can't afford to have so many future interstate corridors to begin with!

The Ghostbuster

I've long believed that North Carolina has too much on their Interstate plate. I would have prioritized getting Interstate 87 extended eastward than extending Interstate 587 westward.

The latest NCDOT 12-month letting list now includes a pavement rehab project for the rest of the US 264 freeway from the Wilson County line to US 64. This is to be let in March 2027. If it follows the same specifications as the contract from the Wilson County line to I-95 let last month, the shoulders will not be widened to interstate standards on this segment either.

Will or will not? I thought the other resurfacing did include shoulder widening.

Yes, sorry, was thinking of US 64, have revised my post.

Here's the official NCDOT post regarding the awarding of the Wilson County repaving project, no mention it being Future I-587, however:

The project has been placed on NCDOT's Construction Progress Report. No starting date yet, but the completion date is 07/30/2027.
