Semiotics of Road Signs

I'm going to dedicate this topic to the unwritten means of altering the meaning of road signs.  One way for example is the addition of pointed corners on signs; in particular:
 
<Salem| is different from |Salem>

Indeed, there could be a paradigm where

         There
           ^
Left <–+–> Right
            v
          Here

could be applied to any simple sign to alter its meaning. For instance

  ^
|40| could mean "highway 40 is ahead" , while
___
|40| could mean "this is highway 40" , effectively making a highway shield.

Yes!  You beat me to it (I had to use Open Office drawings to make this sign, but couldn't upload it in time (I had to make an imgur membership)



Now to create yield and stop signs and the like...
