I never knew that emojis actually worked on this forum using BBCode. How do you know what number to use when there are hundreds of them?

RoadwayWiz you mean?  If so, I would say that they sure have the right feel to qualify as a kind of podcast.

This is such a misfeature on SMF's part. Emoji are just Unicode characters; inserting and displaying them should be the browser and OS's job, not the forum software translating them to PNG images.

OK, but some emoji are useful but not in the list of available ones on this forum:

The forum emoticons are just PNG images with a quick way of inserting them, most of which were drawn up before emoji existed. An emoji is an actual character. It is always available, just like "5", or "<", or "ñ", and can be copy-and-pasted into a text-only field like Notepad/a .txt file, or the post-input box on the forum. Now, you may not have a key on your keyboard that lets you type "ñ", but a good OS will allow you some way of inputting that character (on my computer I hit "Compose" + "~" + "n"; on my phone I can hold down the "n" button and a sub-menu will pop up with "ñ").

The problem with the way the forum is doing that is that it's embedding PNG images of emoji into the text. It would be like if there was an "[ntilde]" tag that displays a PNG of a "ñ". This works for the purposes of displaying the emoji in most cases, but it causes a lot of other browser features to fail. For example, most browsers allow you to increase or decrease the text size, so the PNG image will be resized as well, and become grainy. With an emoji, the OS is in charge of determining the appropriate resolution, and can usually do so better because it's working off of a vector graphic rather than a raster graphic like a PNG.

Additionally, if you are low-vision, a screen reader or sense bar can read the text, see an emoji character, and read it out as whatever the software feels is an appropriate descriptor (probably the Unicode official name, like 👮 = "police officer" or 🥰 = "smiling face with smiling eyes with three hearts"). If the screen-reader encounters an image, there is no way for it to know what the image contains, and will probably just say "Image", leaving the reader baffled as to what the writer was trying to say.

So yeah, the emoji feature on this forum is 💩

Somehow, you're using actual emojis.

I always thought they didn't work because they don't show up in Preview, but quoting your post works perfectly fine when actually submitting it.

I am just copy and pasting them from KCharSelect (the KDE equivalent of Windows's "Character Map" program). They display just fine in the text box and the preview for me.

I know.  But I don't know how high the numbers go, and I figured stopping at three digits was plenty.

i forget what his name is on this forum, but the road guy rob youtube channel is excellent! very well made interesting videos, i enjoy watching them!
