I remember when I was 15 or so, my father renting a color TV and VCR for an occasion.  It was more than a year later (1989 or so) that my parents broke down and bought a color TV and VCR.  (They were cheap.)

Wow.  My parents were cheap, but had a color TV since the mid-1970's which they kept until at least the mid-1990s.  We got a VCR in the late 1980s for it.

That said, my mother had a little black and white portable TV from about 1968 as a gift from her parents.
