PennDOT unveils plan to ease congestion at Lancaster County intersection
PennDOT has unveiled a plan to alleviate congestion at a problem intersection in Lancaster County.

Tuesday, the agency held an open house at the Gap Fire Department to answer the public's questions about the plan, which will modify the intersection of Routes 30 and 41 in Gap.

The $6.5 million project would divide about a mile section of what is currently Route 30 around the 41 intersection and turn it into two eastbound lanes. The westbound lanes of 30 would loop out into existing farmland.

PennDOT District 8 Executive Michael Keiser said it should help decrease the bottleneck commuters have been complaining about for years.

"We're going to have the ability to process more traffic at the intersection and increase traffic flow throughout the area," Keiser said.

Longtime Gap residents at the open house said a fix is long overdue.

"We've needed it for many, many, many years. If you live in Gap, it's an absolute cluster," said Melanie Bird, who has lived in Gap for the past 30 years.

But not everyone is on board with the plan. Anna Maria Picone and her husband Claudio own the Pizza Box, which her father took over in 1986.
Their business sits at the intersection of 30 and 41 and would be torn down to make way for PennDOT's fix.

"This is one of many plans that we have seen, but they ended up choosing this one. And this is the only one that takes us out," Picone said.

The Picones are in the process of finding a new location for their business. Keiser said PennDOT is aiming to start work on the project in the winter of 2013. Construction is expected to take a year and a half.

Just finish the freeway gap on US30 with a continuation of PA41 to the freeway bypass.

Amen to that!  I have traveled on US 30 around that area  back in the 80s and it was even a nightmare then, especially the PA 896 intersection. I can only imagine what it is like now over 20 years of time and development.

It was bad back during the 1970s.  The US-30 freeway would relieve that, and provide much needed relief to the Turnpike between Harrisburg and Valley Forge, and obviate the need to 6-lane all of that segment of the Turnpike.

The thing is why cannot they even widen some of the existing US 30, especially around the Dutch Wonderland Theme Park area?   Even a grade separation with PA 896 would work.  It does not even need to be an interchange, just have one over the other and have a connector road or two between both highways.

Well, the people in the area have to live with it!

As do those passing through.  I haven't been up that way in a few years, but it reached the point for me where I took PA 741 to get between PA 41 and PA 283.
