I don't live in Chicago, so I don't hear of a lot of road news in that area, anyway, is the new section of lake shore drive open yet (if not when will it be)?

No, it's only in the planning stages last I looked.

Interesting, on Google maps I see what looks to be a road being built, just the earth moving part though.

I see curb and maybe pavement when I zoom in and it switches to 45 degrees.

This is from back in April:

QuoteThe new roadway is expected to be complete by December, with landscaping installed in the spring of 2013.

Looks like I was wrong, it is further along than I thought.  There's not as much news recently about it though.

Is there a map that explains why this is part of Lake Shore Dr. instead of South Shore Dr.?

Because South Shore Drive is current US 41 to the west. As for why it's Lake Shore, it's better than naming something else after Daley.

But she concedes, "We're calling it that for our project because we need it to be identified with the larger boulevard."

Dammit, is there any map from a top-down perspective in a nice .jpg or other image format?

And that confirms what I was saying - it's not connected to Lake Shore Drive at all, so why isn't it South Shore Drive?

I makes more sense for them to change the names and make it a continuous street with the same name of lake shore drive.

Steve, for all we know, this is just the first (and easiest) phase for them to extend LSD to meet up with the Skyway. Just a thought why.

Mr Downtown

The developer of the land to the east (old US Steel site now called Lakeside) would like the cachet of a Lake Shore Drive address, but I don't know that the city has approved that name.  The part to the south was constructed with the Harbor Drive name, and I originally expected this to be called that as well.  Chicago DOT press releases just call it "US 41 relocation."
