He, like the hundreds of other people at the Unplug SF party at the Broadway Theater, had surrendered his cell phone at the door, where it was nestled in a slot on a burlap wall hanging in a room likely abuzz with friends' texts left unseen.

San Franciscans, always down for a good queue, lined up around the block to have someone take away something that, left behind in different circumstances, would ruin an evening.

And inside, most said they were glad to be rid of it for a while - though the parting was a sweet sorrow for some.
