The I-65/TN-96 (Murfreesboro Rd) interchange in Franklin, TN needs to be redone!

I cannot believe how much traffic backs up at this interchange and the amount of Stoplights between US 31 and Carothers Parkway. Why wasn't anything done when I-65 was widened a couple of years back?

They need to make this a SPUI like the McEwen interchange to improve traffic flow. Franklin is only going to get bigger as more and more people relocate to the area, and the I-65/TN-96 choke point will only get worse.

DDI!

No, an SPUI is what is needed (consolidate the two ramp stoplights into one), along with removing the stoplight/Intersection at Edward Curd Ln.

I agree, been a while since I was down there and they are re-doing the Goose Creek By-Pass exit right now with the current widening project to the south. A SPUI would work well there.

They are redoing the Peytonsville Road interchange, which has less traffic. Not really understanding the logic

Since Edward Curd Lane is cut off at the hospital now, it would sort of sense for that traffic signal to go.

As for DDI versus SPUI there, while a SPUI would be nice, I would imagine TDOT would consider a DDI to save money. However, if a DDI is installed, it may impact access to some of the businesses that are close to the interchange more so than a SPUI would. It would probably come down to whatever the major movements through the interchange are (which seem like EB and WB 96 to NB 65 in the mornings and SB 65 to EB and WB 96 in the evenings, if I had to guess).

DDI would not solve the problem of the two stoplights on either side. An SPUI would be better because it consolidates the ramp intersections from two into one, therefore one less stoplight. There are too many stoplights on both sides of the interchange.

As you bring up, the entire TN 96 corridor from probably Carothers Parkway west to the Franklin "bypass" needs to be re-imagined completely, which should include an interchange modification at I-65.

An additional lane in each direction, some access management, and even some Michigan lefts would help. I am not up that way enough to remember how well the lights are timed, but my guess is probably not well at all.

Oh they are gosh awfully timed. It's not so much capacity issues, it's access control and the amount of stoplights, and the poorly designed interchange at TN-96.

Rolled through this area a few days ago and one thing that came to my mind to pull some local traffic off TN 96 is another freeway crossing a little ways south.  There's no other option until the next interchange to the south.

That light between the ramp terminals and Carothers Pkwy should be RIRO'd.  Looks like it'd be easy to swap land with that Cracker Barrel's parking lot and connect those two cul-de-sacs to maintain access to those businesses south of 96.

The interchange is an ideal location for a DDI as a huge proportion of the traffic on TN 96 is getting on or off of the interstate.

Extending that inner loop arterial to TN 96 west of downtown might also help things a little by making the next exit north more useful for some traffic.  Looking at the aerials, it seems as that is already the plan as I can make out a r/w in a few places.

TN 840 is the next best thing, way too much development (residential) south of 96 and there would be LOTS of NIMBY'S to deal with, look how long 840 south west of there got delayed.

Doubt that would happen with the Barrel and it's parking lot.

IMHO, a SPUI is probably the best bet.

That plan is on the drawing board, just not sure when with TDOT's budget.
