I'm missing what you're trying to highlight, so it's not "self-explanatory" enough.  Please explain.
Any sign that you can see is missing, in my link you can see the CA 1 shield should be there, but it's not.

How are we supposed to know what sign is missing if the sign isn't there?

I think his point is you can tell something is missing, even if you don't know what it is.

This seems like it belongs in General Highway Talk or Traffic Control.

It's probably under the "Freeway Entrance" sign on the left side of the GMSV image he linked to. But I had to look three times to figure that out.

Those of us checking in, bleary-eyed, in the middle of the night could use some explanation of what we should be looking for.

Somewhere on MA 62 East (either near US 1/I-95 or MA 128), there is a sign that just says "East". It is quite obvious that a "62" used to be under it.

No picture (outdated Flash Player, and therefore no Google Street View, plus I'm not exactly sure where it is.)

On MA 113, one block west of MA 28, there is no sign saying that MA 113 turns left. This might confuse people following the signs. This may fall under missing either as in "nonexistent but needed" or as in "previously existing but gone". I'm not sure which.

Here in Huntsville, AL:
The street signs at the end of a street in my neighborhood went missing once. They were replaced shortly after.
I also remember some street signs on Blevins Gap Road were missing for a year or two before HDOT replaced them as well.
Also, around the city, you can find empty sign posts where there used to be signs, usually for road work.
Also, this street had almost all of the signs removed from it, but the signposts and a few other signs remain.

I also have a picture from along I-459 in Birmingham, AL where the shields were missing but the direction banners still remained.
It's all fun & games until someone summons Cthulhu and brings about the end of the world.

I also collect traffic lights, road signs, fans, and railroad crossing equipment.

It was a couple of months ago that I was driving by the westbound entry ramp for I-90 in Frenchtown as I was going across the overpass. I quickly take a glance at the westbound trailblazer and an I-90 sign is missing. I cannot tell if it had been stolen, or if something happened with the trailblazer assembly.

I just checked both of the above-locations and noticed that there's no EAST 62 reassurance marker east of 128 and there are two eastbound reassurance markers at US 1 & I-95.

This one just east of US 1 and the I-95 South on-ramp has an arial font.

I just now remembered that there is/was a missing I-565 shield in downtown Huntsville.

Following GA 155 southbound into Decatur requires a left turn, but you wouldn't know it by signage and would realize something was amiss when the street ends a block later without any guidance. The sign assembly indicating this movement has been missing for about three years (you can see it in the August 2011 GSV image). That actually tripped me up when I was trying to clinch 155 back in 2012.

Where I live, there is almost no sign theft anymore. It was very common in the 90's. I'm wondering if this is due to changing fads, or the availability of signs for purchase online.

Could also be the increased use of vandal-proof hardware to attach signs to posts.

The "WEST" sign under the I-10 shield is missing.

Okay, I think it got stolen because last Saturday me and some friends were walking along when I noticed the sign was loose. I actually pulled it out and held it. Though we did think of taking it, we just decided to leave it there, but I left it at a 45° angle, which I think someone else saw and took it.

MDT has yet to bring a fresh I-90 shield out to Exit 89 on the westbound entry ramp in Frenchtown, Montana. Some drunk dumb nut decided to steal it I guess and it's been like this since last winter I think.
