Released just before Christmas, the Census Bureau released state population estimates for 2014. Over 39 million now call California home, with Texas coming in second with close to 27.5 million. Florida becomes just the third state ever to have at least 20 million people. North Carolina crossed the 10-million mark, but remains slightly behind Georgia in ninth place. Click here for details, but here are the top ten:

California 39,144,818
Texas 27,469,114
Florida 20,271,272
New York 19,795,791
Illinois 12,859,995
Pennsylvania 12,802,503
Ohio 11,613,423
Georgia 10,214,860
North Carolina 10,042,802
Michigan 9,922,576

The Nature Boy

Now that NC and GA have passed Michigan, I assume Ohio is next. Do you guys that they pass Pennsylvania and Illinois? NC will also probably pass Georgia if the current rate of growth continues as well.

NC becoming the 5th largest state in the country sounds a bit far fetched but it looks quite possible.

noelbotevera

PA is slowly gaining people, but by the 2020 census I expect that NC will overtake them.

Pennsylvania will overtake Illinois first, but I expect Georgia and North Carolina to eventually get past them both. I don't Knopf it'll happen by 2020, but New York will have over 20 million in coming years. Though it'll take a while to get there, New Jersey will eventually get past Michigan for the ten spot.

DTComposer

It's likely Virginia will pass New Jersey before they both pass Michigan, so Virginia will be #10 and New Jersey will remain at #11.

A couple of other things of note:

-Washington, D.C. has grown over 11% since 2010 - to 672K. After losing over 25% of its population between 1950 and 2000, it's gained nearly half of that loss back.

-Oregon is now above 4 million.

-Looks like Utah, Mississippi, Arkansas and Nevada will all top 3 million by 2020.

...and then all the old people in FL will die all at once and the population will dive to 5m.

I guess there's some sort of jealousy attached the above statement, when you seem to hope 15 million people die at once.

News flash: people are living longer, and want warmer climates.

You're welcome to take all the old fogies that head down, there.  More for you means less for us. :D

I moved away a few years ago, but thanks for playing. You didn't address the 15,000,000 deaths, either.

Since I was sick of hearing how Florida was New York's "sixth borough", now I can say...Enjoy being Florida's 68th county.  ;)

Florida is full of spoiled brats bent on Disney World, with puny rides the size of my fist. I have small hands for comparison reasons.

Your statement makes no sense and has nothing to do with the topic at hand.

Hint: You don't have to post in every thread just because you can.

The Nature Boy

There are also sizable numbers of young people moving to the Southern states. It's not just old people moving to Florida, a lot of young people are as well.

That second part was me not thinking straight, I pretty much entered rant mode.

The first part was similarly incomprehensible.

You don't want to brag about small hands
