QuoteHighway 3 in Trinity County will remain closed up to two months after part of the road collapsed, authorities said.

The California Highway Patrol reported the closure at 11:30 p.m. Monday about 10 miles north of Weaverville, according to the California Department of Transportation. The agency said the section of the highway fell away due to very saturated soil and the wet weather.

The agency, which met at 4 p.m. Tuesday to further evaluate the roadway, shared a picture showing whole chunks of the roadway had disappeared, in one spot completely severing the roadway.

Initially it wasn't clear how long the road would be closed.

"Highway 3 is closed indefinitely – there is no road," a CHP incident log said.

But Tuesday evening Caltrans officials said they may keep the highway closed up to eight weeks, said Denise Yergenson, spokeswoman for the agency. Complete repairs may take up to three months, she said. ...

Workers are planning to reopen Eastside and Trinity Mountain roads within the next two days as a detour. That route had been closed for winter.

Highway 3 remains open north and south of the closure, which is near Rush Creek Road and Trinity Dam Boulevard southwest of Trinity Lake. It's about two miles north of the Rush Creek campground.

County roads jut off of Highway 3 in various areas, though drivers should always check with both Siskiyou and Tehama counties' public works departments before traveling in the areas.

QuoteHighway 3 is closed 10 miles north of Weaverville in Trinity County due to a rock slide, the state Department of Transportation reports.

Motorists are advised to use an alternative route. The California Highway Patrol reported the closure at 11:30 p.m. Monday, according to the Redding Record-Searchlight.

There is no estimated time of reopening, Caltrans reports.

Heavy rain saturated soil supporting the highway, leading to the failure, according to Caltrans.

QuoteThe California Department of Transportation says more than 500 feet of roadway slid off State Route 3 in Northern California, approximately 14 miles west of I-5, between Mt. Shasta and Redding, California.

Caltrans officials say the California Highway Patrol notified them of significant damage to the road on Monday. Crews responded and attempted to set up a one-way traffic control operation, but weather conditions led to the complete failure of the roadway at around 11:30pm Monday night.

CALTRANS should hand that one off to the State of Jefferson since their capital is up in Yreka, that's the main road in.  :-D

Some guy from South Pasadena will build a house in the gap.  Highway 3 will never be reconnected.

CalTrans will renumber this to CA 39 so they can permanently close this.

QuoteA new detour has opened to get around the road collapse on Highway 3, but only for some vehicles. Caltrans officials said they are working with contractor Tullis, Inc. to open the new route open off Trinity Dam Road to all traffic.

The detour is currently open only to 4-wheel drive vehicles during certain hours. Currently, only some vehicles can get through when there is a pilot car, which will be from 11 a.m. to noon, 3 p.m. to 4 p.m., and 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. the following morning.

Caltrans said crews are still working to get the route open for all local traffic. However, it will always be under traffic control restrictions, with priority being given to emergency and service vehicles.

Denise Yergenson with Caltrans said that the detour is a combination of Forest Service, Sierra Pacific and Trinity County roads. She explained there are flaggers in the area, as well as a giant changeable leader board sign to let people know where the detour is located.

Yergenson emphasized that none of these roads are marked with signs, just the flaggers. She added that it is only 4-wheel drive vehicle being let through, and no one with a trailer is being let in because of the current road conditions.

Remember: If the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.

I'd rather be a child of the road than a son of a ditch.

At what age do you tell a highway that it's been adopted?

:-D
Or CA 173, turn it into dirt, put a gate, THEN tell the guy from South Pasadena he can move in. The State of Jefferson will never find it.
Pleased to meet you

Now if they could get a single lane of asphalt open on that 3,000 foot mountain pass between Weaverville and Shasta on 299 that would be great....  That was a lot of fun trying to go down a 6% grade on dirt with a ton of people who were spooked by the surface in the construction zone.
