US routes that were replaced by Interstates and decommissioned

I'm working on an alternate-reality "Fictional Highways" project. The premise is, what if the Interstate highway system had been built as an augmentation of the US highway system rather than a new system. For this project, I need a list of US routes that were completely or partially replaced with Interstates and decommissioned. Anyone know of a good site that lists these?

The most famous example is US 66.  It was replaced by I-40, I-44,  and I-55.

No, the alignments are different even though I-210 is literally within sight of US 66 at times.

No, the alignments are different even though I-210 is literally within sight of US 66 at times.

On the other hand, I-215 from San Bernardino to Devore and I-15 from Devore to Barstow are former alignments of US 66 (and 91).

The two freeways in metro Los Angeles that actually were signed as part of US 66 are US 101/Hollywood Freeway between Santa Monica Boulevard and the Four-Level, and the entirety of the Arroyo Seco Parkway (Pasadena Freeway), today's Route 110.  Could even include the easternmost portion of the Ventura Freeway (Route 134) which was originally the Colorado Freeway carrying the easternmost segment of Alternate US 66.

I think really there are only poritons of US 66 that were subplanted in small parts though.  Think of the other routes along the way.  There are even portions of US 66 that were not along the current I-40.  So maybe from Amarillo to Del Rio in Texas and then parts in New Mexico.  There are significant portions in Arizona that were not subplanted.

Actually a lot of I-40 in Arizona was built directly on top of the previous alignment.  I think most people assume there is more given that the pre-53 alignment exists with all of Kingman to Seligman.  Excluding the BLs from Ash Fork east I-40 basically is a direct overlay over the last 66 alignment.  Now granted you can find older alignments all through out the state especially if you are willing to hike or four wheel...

A big section of I-40 was built on top of US 66 from east of Moriarity, NM to just west of Santa Rosa... and bits from Tijeras to just east of Carnuel (portion that runs southwest-northeast). You can verify this by noting the set of lanes that have more "hills" vs the other set of lanes in the same location.

I started a similar thread before wherein the Interstate system preserved the US Route system's numbering but aligned primary route numbers onto Interstate alignment with the old routes becoming alternates:







I was only able to do 3 states so far, however; I may revive this system in the future when I have time. I may scrap the alternates idea with higher 3-digit auxiliary routes (i.e., US 866 instead of US 66A on old US 66 between Seligman and Kingman).

I'd like to see what you do with Louisiana. Especially the way US 90 diverges from I-10/12. In my plan, I-10 is US 90 and US 90 in southeast Louisiana is part of an extended US 98.

I had something like that myself but with red/white/blue US Route shields with Interstate in the banner to denote sections that met Interstate standards.  I think that I had a large portion of old alignments dropped or given a 3d to simple things.  I kind of like the greater than 300 miles intrastate rule of thumb for US Routes.  Seemed like it would be a lot of work but would make for a much more logical national grid.

The northeast would be interesting. Just base 3di's on the parent route, except I-44 replaces I-195 in RI and MA; I-202 replaces I-287 in NJ only; (Westchester piece becomes I-209 and the concurrency with its parent is eliminated). 

CT: I-1, I-5, and I-6 would replace I-95, I-91, and I-84.

RI: I-1, I-44

MA: I-1, I-5, I-6, and I-44. I-20 replaces I-90

NH, I-3, and I-2 for I-89

VT: I-2 and I-5, with I-102 for I-189

ME: I-1

NY: I-1, I-6, I-20.  I-9 for I-87, I-11 for I-81. I-86 becomes I-6N.  I-88 becomes I-20S.  I-99 becomes I-220.   

NJ: I-1, I-202.  I-22 for I-78, I-46 for I-80. I-30 for I-76.

PA: I-1, I-11, I-22, I-30, I-220.  I-70 becomes I-40.  I-79 becomes I-19.  I-80 is I-46 from I-11 to NJ, I-6 from I-11 west (I-6 duplexes with I-11 from Dunmore to Butler Township).

DE: I-1 (although US 1 never enters the state, it's close enough)

MD: I-1, I-40. I-68 becomes I-119. I-83 becomes I-111 (in honor of it's old US route counterpart). I-97 becomes I-301 while existing I-395 becomes I-501 when hidden I-595 and I-66 are joined together as part of an I-50 (via DC Beltway concurrency) numbering.
