I happened to do a left head check on I-84 wb the other day going through hartford past exit 47, and looked up and saw this a the onramp above!!!
I can't believe I;ve been driving by and missing it for so long.

It's Old
It's beautiful
It's army green non reflective sheeting,
true older button copy (see arrow)
IT'S LIGHTED... that's unheard of around here. (lighted AND post mounted... very rare).
It's most likely endangered.

check it out..  BGS for onramp near the armory in Hartford.

the last picture is a very old shield posted near this same location, thought it was worthy of a snapshot.

Maybe this BGS could go in the AAroads Shield Gallery??

That is a great find!!   I also like how it is on poles! Most lighted BGS are on gantries.  I wonder what generation sign this is?   It can't be the first as weren't most early signs dark green?
Also, don't forget the Exit 10 & 11 signage on I-84 EB in Newtown with the lighted gantry.
I only take pics of good looking signs. Long live non-reflective button copy!

did that sign ever have an I-86 shield on it?  The shield is 1970 spec and looks far newer than the rest of the sign.

No need for an I-86 shield on that sign, as I-86 didn't begin until around the East Hartford/Manchester line.

I remember seeing this sign years ago and shot a cell phone camera pic of it.  Definetly rare nowadays and the only one I've seen with a light on a "ground-mounted" expressway entry BGS.  Back in the day, I remember many BGSs on I-91 south of Hartford were lighted... wished I took pics back then!

At that point, (exit 47) an I 86 shield would have been preceded by a "TO" because it was always I-84 there in downtown hartford and 86 didn't start for another 4-5 miles east of that point, at exit 59.  Most likely at some point, for whatever reason, the I84 shield had to be replaced. (from the looks of it, at least 20-30 years ago, lol)

I have always looked at that sign, and never noticed it.  That has to be the first lighted sign that I have seen in Greater Hartford.

I'm not a signgeek, but I believe that button copy is fairly common in CT.  I didn't realize that made the state unique until I met some other folks like Doug Kerr a couple of years ago.

Yes, button copy in CT is fairly common, but like everywhere else, it's becoming less common.  Button copy isn't one of the only things that makes Connecticut unique, at least.  So after the button copy signs have been replaced, there will still be expressway stubs, neat old bridges, scenic highways and byways to explore, etc.

And Also after the button copy is replaced... we will still have something unique about our BGS's.  I could be wrong, but I think were are the only state that generally used NO border what so ever on the exit tab.  From photo's I've seen, some states use a much thinner border, but I think the borders exist on just about every other state's exit tabs.  Even on most of our newest signage, there are no borders on the tabs, they are unframed.

I drove by that sign today!  It is on Broad St...unless there is another one.  The photo link doesn't work anymore.  And, the street before this sign there is an ancient 1950's I-91 shield.

However, the poles look newer on the I-84 BGS

Did this photo end up posted anywhere else? The link goes to a page saying the domain expired and is awaiting renewal.
