US 311 is returning to Virginia

I'm confused as to why Berry Hill Road needs to be a US route? Low traffic counts, there's nothing there really. Isn't I-785 there to give Danville it's recognition?

The US 311 extension is a North Carolina endeavor.  They requested Virginia's participation.

See http://www.ctb.virginia.gov/resources/2012/july/pres/Resolution_Agenda_Item_4_rte311_transfer_CTBresolution_July18_12rev.pdf

North Carolina's rationale can be found starting on Page 30 of this document: https://connect.ncdot.gov/resources/safety/Route%20Changes/2013_01_22.pdf

Interesting. I'm not so much complaining it's just hard to imagine 863 a US route. Also isn't wasn't even a few years ago NC didn't even sign 311 between 220B and 220 along 704 in Madison. Now they've extended it a couple times. I can't imagine the residents along 863 are happy about it,even with traffic counts at the state line around 2000.

I think it would be a roadgeek anomaly tho. Ignoring consigned routes with interstates, how often do two US routes (311,58) cross over without a direct connection? Will there be signage at the 58/58B interchange for 311?

Government would be tolerable if not for politicians and bureaucrats.

Bumping an old thread to post that it appears that US 311 has been relocated at its northern terminus near Danville to intersect the US 58 freeway bypass at a grade-separated interchange instead of terminating at an at-grade intersection at the US 58 business route.

I saw a photo posted on a couple of Facebook forums showing the updated signage from the US 58 freeway.

Google Street View does not yet show the updated signage.

Yeah, I had no idea this thread existed......

The Harville-Saunders Parkway is not yet shown as US 311 on Google Maps: https://www.google.com/maps/@36.5744503,-79.5427278,2174m/data=!3m1!1e3?entry=ttu&g_ep=EgoyMDI1MDkzMC4wIKXMDSoASAFQAw%3D%3D. The roadway has yet to be driven on in Street View (it was not yet complete the last time a Google Car went along US 311 in September 2024). Personally, when US 311 was extended back into Virginia, I think it should have continued west on Business 58 to intersect US 58 there.

Just a Note that the Google Street View was Updated November 2025 showing US 311 along US 58 Danville Expressway and along the Parkway itself.

Google though has not yet updated.

But Not East on US58  (Still shows Old Exit Name)- Appears Google Car explicitly went up US58 to go down the Parkway.

PS
I find it humorous that US311 does not end at US58, per sign showing US311 North toward Vandola Church Road, at the top of the US58 West Exit Ramp.

The Ghostbuster

It looks like there is space along the new US 311 alignment to eventually widen it to four lanes.

My photo from June 2025 did not show this mess.  I wonder what made VDOT make changes....

That's a bit of a mystery considering that the rerouted US 311 isn't even on most of VDOT's current ArcGIS maps, but there is one (for speed limits) that shows it and it clearly ends at US 58 despite the signage at the end of the offramp showing US 311 heading both directions. I don't think there's much of a road off to the right there...

Probably because the assembly it replaced showed 1260 going both directions, which was correct, but US 311 going only one way is a nuance that was probably lost on the sign crew.

Also just noticed the latest street view shows that the "old" route (2012-2024) is signed as Alt. 311

Yes - The Expansion has started just a little delayed from 2025.  I am not sure all the companies had signed on for the Industrial Park in 2024... so maybe they hedge their bets that 2 lanes would be enough until they got signatures... which they did and buildings/jobs in process...

So oddly enough, VDOT has a new LRS Route Master ArcGIS map and it actually now shows US 311 ending not at US 58, but at SR 872.

Have they fixed the sign goof with the US 58 trailblazer heading south on 1260, err US 311?: https://maps.app.goo.gl/TWURNTg5pzryRkobA

VDOT didn't even bother widening the shoulders or striping edge lines through the interchange? Talk about being cheap.
