Couldn't find a topic about this anywhere, so here goes...

Besides I-180 in Illinois, what are some of the least traveled 3dis in the country? In a quick search, I have I-229 in Missouri. In 2021, the AADT was 3,041 VPD. It is the least used Interstate in Missouri and is planned to be demolished. Any others?

Interesting, is that really it? There's probably three or four times that many 2di's with sections under 10k.

it actually makes sense, if you think about it - you're only going to have a spur or a loop where deemed necessary. on the other hand, there can easily be extended sections of 2DIs passing through no-man's land (and where you'd never see a loop or spur present).

Exactly.  3dis in general are put where there is a bunch of population (a.k.a. cities). 2dis have to run through rural areas to connect said cities.

webny99

I guess that's my east-of-the-Mississippi bias. I'm used to 3di's connecting cities and being almost as long as 2di's...  I-476, I-287, I-390, I-395, I-495, etc.

I can't imagine I-115 in MT has very much traffic.

I was thinking the same thing. According to MDT, it had an AADT of 4,058 in 2020.

The eastbound lanes get just over 4000 AADT.

I don't think that count includes the westbound lanes.

Montana's basic traffic data map isn't clear, but I do believe it's both ways. MDT's Transportation Data Management System shows a 2021 AADT of 4357, with EB AADT of 2427 and WB AADT of 1930.

JayhawkCO

Re: I-115, keep in mind the ones I posted upthread were 3dis where they were the lowest interstate AADT in their state. If there's a super rural stretch of 2di (or another 3di that's lower), I wouldn't have posted it in the list higher up.

I know that I-895 south of the I-97 connection used to be all but deserted.

Ah, thanks!  I was using this one, and that same data point was labeled "I-115E".

What about I-180 in Wyoming?
Looking at a WYDOT AADT chart, it's 20k in both directions for its highest, and 10k for lowest. The number makes sense to me, as an arterial road in an urban area, compared to an interstate in the middle of nowhere that is I-180 IL.
