US 12 "reroute" in Indiana?

It seems that US 12 was rerouted onto Cline Ave from where it intersects it southeast of the abandoned roadway south to US 20. I traveled a week ago the "old part" but noticed a "US 12 West follow US 20 West" when I reached the one-way pair in Gary. Then I traveled US 20 today to find a "US 12 East" trailblazer pointing to the entrance to Cline Ave (IN 912) north.

I'm so confused...

Anyone else daring enough to travel through Gary notice this?

Ah, the open skies, wind at my back, warm sun on my... wait, where the hell am I?!
As a matter of fact, I do own the road.

This turnback happened a few years ago. Of course I don't have the exact date, but for some reason I had thought I had seen this quirk in 07. I think it took me by surprise back when I first saw it, having driven the route the year before.

I would have been early '07.  I went through there in May and noticed it then...only because I got lost trying to follow the original route that was no longer signed.  Not a good place to be lost.

must be a remnant old shield.  Given that it's Gary, I'm not surprised.

I believe in 2005 INDOT and the City of Gary agreed to reroute US-12 along US-20(5th Avenue) West to IN-912 North to Columbus Drive(US-12). They also truncated IN-312 at IN-912 Cline Avenue at the same time. All of this was done in conjuction with Gary-Chicago Airport Expansion which, has been delayed due the EJ&E sale to CN railroad. As far as I know, INDOT did not petition AASHTO for the change.

well Acc to many sources US 12 follows that eerry route and not 912 and 20.  So until CMAP and RM consider it I say it clinched.

And agentsteel53 it's pretty fresh for a remnant.  The split of the 1-ways also had a US-12 West trailblazer on it. (meaning the OW was merged onto 20 instead of the 2-lane ahead of it.

A little OT here - wierd being on US 20 and having a wide ROW, Toll road, power lines, freight tracks, South Shore Line, US 20. all right next to each other.
