My parents still surf through the channels.  Recently, this caused a problem.  There's a known Cox issue in this area with the local government access channel, such that it doesn't come in, and then you can't proceed past that channel when scrolling through them.  They didn't know this, and they also didn't realize that their channel surfing was always getting interrupted at the same channel.  All they knew was that it kept showing "unavailable" and then "freezing up" on them.  I sent a tech out there, and he upgraded their services to newer boxes.  Later, they discovered they were having the same issue as before.  So I sent another guy out there.  Finally, someone knew about the issue and showed them that all they have to do is back out to the menu and manually select the next channel.

As opposed to the old days, when you'd surf through the channels one by one to see what was on, except one-third of them had commercials playing, so you had to surf through them all yet again, and, by the time you finally settled on a show to watch, it was already halfway through the plot line.
