Some photos taken at NDOT's "Rush to Washoe" event, the first public viewing of the new freeway between south Reno and the Washoe Valley north of Carson City.  The photos are arranged from north to south; the first two are northward views while the rest are generally looking south.

1.  At the Mt. Rose Highway exit with downtown Reno in the distance.  The cars in the southbound lanes are parked; that's not a backup for the people driving.  Actually, compared to the thousands of bicyclists, there didn't seem to be all that many folks doing the slow southbound drive.

2.  Again looking toward Reno from a little further back up the hill.

3.  On the way south, first view of Slide Mountain.

4.  First view of the main attraction on this drive, the Galena Creek Bridge.  That was the only unicycle I saw.

5.  The bridge was the destination of most pedestrians and bicyclists, and NDOT set up a big center of activity there with informational booths etc.

6.  View of Slide Mountain and Mt. Rose from the bridge.  I think there will be some stiff winds blowing through this canyon and high-profile vehicles should be diverted off the freeway onto the old highway below (to be re-signed as "Alternate US 395) at those times, just as they are diverted off the freeway through the Washoe Valley now.

7.  Now south of the bridge and heading directly for Slide Mountain for a short distance.

8.  Long straightaway into the Washoe Valley.

9.  Approaching Exit 50.  As you can see here both northbound and southbound traffic will temporarily be carried by the southbound lanes until the Exit 50 interchange is completed and the new freeway is properly connected to the existing US 395 freeway through the Washoe Valley.

10.  South end of today's event, and looking on down toward where the old and new freeways need to be connected, under the bridge.

11.  Even as today's event progressed some work was ongoing at the Bowers Mansion Road freeway entrance.

Thank you for sharing these! I was coming up to Lake Tahoe on the same day as this event, and I had just missed it so I am glad to see sections of the road that I didn't get to drive last month. I will have to come back to Reno-Tahoe to drive the new 580 freeway. And of course to take tons of pictures and post them on AARoads someday.

Andy
