is this road completely paved?  am thinking of doing this in a couple weeks.  anything I should know, apart from the general absence of services?

I'm pretty sure it's all paved, and I think someone verified this in another thread.  As I recall, it's in pretty good shape, and I had no trouble taking it at a fairly high speed (60-70 mph) when I last drove it.

Really nothing to note on the road itself, just great wide-open country to see. 

If you take the loop off it up Steens Mtn., you might want to avoid the southern part of that loop.  It's been years since I was on it, but that was a very rough road -- rutted, with some sections literally having gullies down the middle.  Luckily, we were in a friend's jeep that could negotiate those.  The northern part of the loop, on the other hand, is in good shape and can easily be driven by a passenger car.

I'm not sure if the transition from county road to state highway is clearly signed at Roaring Springs Ranch, so if you can, please get a photo of the spot and report if there's anything noteworthy.

I will look for county/state delineations, including small green signs.

google maps (that well-known arbiter of all that is true and accurate) has the entire route labeled as OR-205. 

I just would like to be sure that everything - state, county, etc - is paved.  I don't much care who maintains it

I can confirm that the entire route down to Denio, beyond the end of the OR-205 designation, is paved and striped, and you won't notice too much of a difference in road quality as it switches from ODOT maintenance to Harney County maintenance--except maybe that the cattle grates are more jarring to cross (ODOT's are merely painted)

honestly, I'd have no problem with it being OR-205 all the way to the Nevada state line. 

the average motorist doesn't care who maintains the road.  so long as it's all done to a similar standard to other state highways, I say give it the alien-head recognition.  it's more confusing from the perspective of "route numbers as navigational aid" when it arbitrarily ends, even though the road goes on for a while longer.

It should be OR 205 all the way to the border, but imposing such fantasies on OSM (or Google, lol) is not smart.
