I don't this this topic has its own thread, anyway this road will open Friday morning at around 9:30am.  A huge reshuffling of highways is about to happen.

Indyroads

This probably means that more of SR 26 will be decommissioned as well, Making the gap in the state road even wider. I am surprised that they didn't just reroute the highway to US-52 or I-65 instead of just straight decommissioning it through Lafayette.

The new bypass route is definitely needed however. will be a massive improvement.
And a highway will be there;
    it will be called the Way of Holiness;
    it will be for those who walk on that Way.
The unclean will not journey on it;
    wicked fools will not go about on it.

It was planned not sure if it still is, to route 26 onto the bypass to sr 25 to 52 to 38 then to 65 and back to the old 26.

silverback1065

I went to the ribbon cutting ceremony and they said it will open today at 6pm.

silverback1065

Well I can now confirm that SR 26 ends at US231/52 and picks up again at I-65.  SR25 does the exact same thing.  SR 38 just ends alone at old 52.  No idea about 43 but I'm pretty sure it will be cut back to I-65 and I know 443, 526, and 126 will all die.  New signage is up for 52 mostly.  I don't understand why they didn't fix the teal road corridor, at least repave it! And fix that confusing intersection at teal and 4th street.

I don't at all see the connection between those statements, unless you intend to find out about the bypass before visiting with her :P

I'm in Lafayette for work this week and drove the extension. It's definitely a nice road but, like most roads in Indiana, the speed limit could stand to be a bit higher.

One weird thing I noticed: there's an End East 26 sign at the new extension and an End East 26 sign at River Road. Which is correct? Why are they ending SR26 instead of routing around town like they did with SR25?

I'm only here twice a year so it's always interesting to see how quickly things are changing.

PurdueBill

At least about a week and a half ago, 25 ends coming in from Delphi at I-65.  Didn't check it on the south side.   The END sign at River Road has been there for maybe a year--it will probably now come down with the other 26 signage between there and the new 231.

Why have route numbers if they are going to end and restart?  Locals will follow whatever route they always have, but for non-locals, the disappearing act could be brutal to navigation. For several years, 25 was routed onto 65 and over 38 back to its old routing; why not leave that and add 26 to the mix instead of letting people fend for themselves?

Maybe I missed it above, but what will happen to 43? It needed 443 to connect to 52.  Will it just end at its current endpoint, be extended down River Road to meet 231, or what?

US 52 following Teal is absolute madness.  I lived near there for 4 years; traffic was a mess then and it isn't any better now.  Running it past Jeff HS and the fairgrounds, on a 2-lane road....bonkers!  Of course, years ago 350S (now Veterans Pkwy) seemed like a great candidate for a 52 reroute over to the new 231--when there wasn't any development there.  Now 350S may be even more clogged than Teal!

I wonder what will happen with all the addresses....everything between Sagamore and I-65 on now-former 26 has a "SR 26" address; like stuff on former 25.  They renamed 25 Schuyler Ave from Sagamore to 65; maybe former 26 will become more of South Street?  (Renaming Old 231 as part of 4th St. went over like a lead balloon.)

I understand why they removed the route numbers from the highways. Ideally everything that INDOT does is geared toward big trucks. That is why they will never use anything but a state road as a detour for another state road. In Lebanon the closure of SR-32 has them detouring you all the way north to SR-47 and back via US-231. there are many better, shorter routes, but INDOT wont use them because they are not truck friendly. This must also be why they will not allow state roads to remain signed once they are relinquished and transferred to the city.

I do wish they would have made an exception for Sagamore parkway and allowed it to remain as US-52 even if they had transferred it to the city. I don't see any harm in allowing the route to remain signed even after it is deferred to city or county maintenance.

Indiana is notorious for posting ridiculously low speed limits on roads that are capable of handling higher speeds. Notably I-465. Who drives 55 mph on that freeway anyway. Not even the cops do. Same with I-65 and I-70 in Downtown Indy which could be posted at 55 mph instead of 50 mph , or I-70 in Terre Haute, I-65 in the Falls Region and Northwest Indiana, Borman I-94/80, etc. all those roads should be 65 mph instead of the current 55 mph.

Also many of the state roads could be at least 65 mph  all over the state. and US-31 and the commerce connector could be 70 mph. There definitely needs to be some adjustments to the speed limits.

Bridge replacement east of Leb-tucky, but they may be done with that now. I have noticed the detours have been taken down.

Why not--if we're making it nearly impossible for people to follow any state route through town, make sure they all go!

I wish Indiana would do like RI and Mass and allow state route numbers to be posted on county or city-maintained roads.  Heck, Indiana won't even post a DETOUR of a state route on non-state routes, leading to insane detours that can be 20 miles out of the way vs. using nearby roads of similar quality.  It's like INDOT has OCD or something!

Worst detour I've seen them do, when 465 was closed in town at 69. the official detour was us 31 to sr 28 I believe.

That's pretty much SOP for most every state I've traveled in. Kentucky posts detours of numbered routes on numbered routes nearly exclusively.
Government would be tolerable if not for politicians and bureaucrats.

But Kentucky has a much larger state highway system than Indiana.

PennDOT, and by far not the only one, posts detours only on routes that can handle truck traffic. The quickest route is often several miles faster - and with their extensive secondary network, on all state roads. I generally go with "if it's closed, take the next turn in that direction that looks like a through road."

Unrelated to this, but I'm actually surprised INDOT hasn't started chopping SR 32 up into several random pieces.

If they ever build a bypass around Crawfordsville then they may. Same applies to Noblesville. they are planning some kind of bypass for SR-32 through Westfield (since it is down to a 2 lane city street with too much traffic). I am surprised that there are not more one way couplets to handle state roads going through a city center in the state, but the towns and cities would probably be against that.

SR-38 is another route that is less needed than before. they could pretty much decommission the entire route west of Sheridan, or reroute it along SR-47 to I-65 and end it there.

In the Google Mapmaker Program, we are actually refusing to remove the route designations through cities, like in Indiana, especially Lafayette.  We've actually had serious discussions about restoring them to other cities that INDOT has abandoned.
They said take a left at the fork in the road.  I didn't think they literally meant a fork, until plain as day, there was a fork sticking out of the road at a junction.

I agree. it is a shame that these routes have been truncated and not rerouted around the city. also US-52 routed along a 2 lane side street instead of just leaving it along Sagamore Parkway is so short sighted that it makes no sense. Its just plain dumb. I think that Indiana law should be changed to allow cities to retain the highway designations on roads that have been transferred to them. That does mean however that they will need to maintain highway standards along these routes.

I am also in favor of using business routes where logical also.

Why would you do that?  Do you guys like to keep up incorrect information?  This just adds to the confusion.  Remove the shields and put label them old us 52/231 etc.  If the road isn't signed as 52, 231 etc in the field, it shouldn't be on a map either, maps are supposed to be accurate to what is out in the field, if they aren't they are worthless.

mukade

Google Maps should reflect reality. Although it is good for showing new roads quickly, incorrectly marked highways are a real problem. One big one is US 52 shown on the west and south legs of I-465 (including a part that never carried it). They finally added US 52 to the north and east legs where it actually is, but they left the wrong route.

Other examples:
- SR 26 thru Lafayette is simply wrong. It is in two discontinuous sections. It is as wrong as if US 31 and US 40 were still shown along Meridian and Washington Streets in Indy. Those days are gone.
- SR 25 around Lafayette is simply wrong. It is in two discontinuous sections
- Future US 35 in Kokomo has been shown incorrectly for some time

Thank goodness the incorrect I-69 markers were removed from Kentucky and Tennessee.

Anyway, refusing to match reality, if that is what they really do, is a very bad plan.
