I actually think that this is an improvement over general TxDOT practice regarding signing state business routes. I like it.

I haven't seen that before. Usually TxDOT labels its suffixed business routes with a tiny letter at the base of the shield.

If only they had the letter be half the height of the number. They could also just lose the business plate at that point.

It reminds me of New York's suffixed routes. I definitely agree that "Business" is redundant here.

As a side note, there's a misused red octagon in the background. Stop signs are supposed to be "stop, then continue", not "do not enter".

Idaho used to use brown shields for scenic routes.

Is that the only distinctive thing that Idaho's DOT does? Very nondescript compared with other states from what I've noticed.

May or may not be batticorn.

I also collect traffic lights, road signs, fans, and railroad crossing equipment.

Huh.  Apparently, Milwaukee does that on alleys.

Technically, it's an octagon...

Beat me to pointing that out.
Government would be tolerable if not for politicians and bureaucrats.

This contractor-produced sign near Nuzums, W. Va.
It's rare for WVDOH to post an arrowless sign, and in addition to a standalone shield on CR 56 an eighth mile west, this Clearview reassurance street blade is probably unique.

Wow! I've never seen anything similar.  This road (Old WV-56) also has the coincidental history of being the original routing of WV-33 (which was removed upon US-33 being routed into the state).  Nowadays, the other end of "Old WV-56" (former WV-33) is now the current routing of US-33.  All worthy of unique signage.

My personal theory has something to do with the fact that that sign was contractor-produced. I know WVDOH has arrowless signs that are used in urban areas, but they are never used as reassurance markers. The usage of Clearview tells me that the sign is contractor-produced, so that's probably how the sign came to be.

I am also aware of the US 33/WV 33 coincidence. It's pretty cool seeing kinda-relevant CR 33/xx signs along the locally named "four lanes."

I don't remember having seen any other road sign with the phrase "BY WAY OF" on it.

I drove past a week ago, and the hanging shield either fell off or has been removed, leaving the old OK 3 shield on the sign.
