Whats with all the holes?
It's quite common for people to shoot at road signs. In that neighborhood, they're spectacularly good shots.

Quote from: hotdogPi on April 25, 2026, 07:26:37 AMIt reduces wind loading.

I've never seen that treatment on a sign nearly that small, though.

And now we have a clue to the real answer:  they form perforation lines!

I actually did consider repeating roadman's question on that thread, and then I realized that those answers were already being made.

Incidentally, you wouldn't see that sign in NY because it is the state's official policy to fill holes.

Here is the other sign on a different pole at the same intersection.

Here is one at a different intersection that is really clear zoomed in.  No clue.  The holes are too close together IMO to be useful to run banding through to attach it to the mast.

I notice the black borders around the stoplights also have holes in them.  Spot checked around my town and didn't spot any.  Spotted more in Bangor.

But, wind holes are the correct answer:  https://www.rd.com/article/stop-sign-with-holes-meaning/

I wonder why Maine does this for wind loading considering New Brunswick doesn't do it, PEI doesn't do it, the Gaspé peninsula and the Magdalen Islands don't do it, and they all have the same wind issues.

Every so often, we have a good idea. Until it's a bad idea, then it was folly.

I found Impact on a road sign. There's one at each end of the new bus lane on Boulevard Hochelaga in Québec City:

Both the Garden State Parkway and NJ Turnpike are both toll roads but only the latter gets a TOLL banner while the former don't.

The toll banner is not centered. 78 east is also toll, thus the toll banner is there because no matter what you encounter a toll if you take that ramp. An example where it is centered https://maps.app.goo.gl/J6az4U6155X7sh5s5

78 west is not tolled, so you don't see a toll banner for the GSP until its actual interchange with 78.

That's a totally normal way of giving directions in western Kansas.

When we moved to northwestern Kansas in 1990, my dad inherited a database of church members and how to get to their farms for visitation, which had been compiled by the previous pastor.  Rural roads in the county were not named at all.  Each entry would say something like...

STUTZMAN, ALBERT  6E 3S 1W 2S

... and that would be how you got to Albert's house.  Six miles west from town, then three miles south, then one mile west, then two miles south, and you're there.

Perhaps there are so many mountains the directions are needed so you don't mix it up with another, lesser mountain.

You mean a twenty-foot one, instead of a thirty-foot one?

You can see how those might be easily confused, then.

I might have seen a 20-foot one somewhere. On I-405 in California, there were electronic (lit) advertisements that took up several building stories. If any of them were advertising an iPhone 17 or a $31,995 car...

This display in Boston is of adequate size but the numerals take up a very small portion of the ad. It doesn't qualify, but it's the right idea.
