They should color it brown, and call it a historical site.

Someone tell NYSDOT that if they want to leave the sign up, they have the power to bring back OnTrack too. We need more revived passenger rail lines.

Quote from: TBKS1 on August 03, 2025, 12:42:01 PMHere's a really large arrow placard underneath two signs in Pittsburg, TX. I took this on 21 July.

On our next episode of Texas Doing Strange Things with Arrow Placards, how about some orange ones?

These shields were also pretty massive.

A shield over a shield.
The newer shield has CALIFORNIA above the number; the old one doesn't. That's crucial information for the millions of travelers on that road.

Well it won't be long where this assembly will be discarded when Caltrans decides to tear down the Central Freeway and make the street underneath it become US 101. Of course, that will require new ramps here.
Every day is a winding road, you just got to get used to it.

Caltrans never even studied it.  The political points someone gained by suggesting a study have figuratively expired.

I have the feeling that they want to bring back OnTrack. But do they really think the jobs and the customer base will return for such a line? Do they actually think tearing down I-81 is going to bring it back?

Who is "they"?  No one is seriously talking about bringing it back.  It's just an old sign.

I was referring to whoever ran OnTrack. I thought that was pretty obvious.

That's sort of like the "Use only as directed" mumble at the end of every patent medicine ad. If you're not going to obey the signal, why would you obey the sign that tells you to obey the signal?

From a truly pedantic viewpoint, the sign isn't telling you to obey the signal. It's telling you to "observe" the signal. "Yes, I observed it was red, but I didn't feel like waiting."

Reminds me of my Boy Scout days in the 1980s. The Personal Management merit badge was required to make it to Eagle Scout. One of the requirements was that you had to make a budget for yourself. I didn't stick to the budget I made and I pointed out that all it said was that I had to make a budget, not that I had to make any effort to adhere to it. (I got my merit badge and, later, my Eagle rank.)

In law "observe" often means "obey". So you can still get a ticket.

kphoger

Exactly.  We are expected to observe the law, and that doesn't just mean to read the statutes in a book at the library.

You're putting the emphasis on the wrong word—the sign is reminding you to observe YOUR signal, as opposed to observing SOMEBODY ELSE'S signal.

This sign is used in the Kansas City area in places where it might be confusing which signal applies to you. (I first saw it used in an application where there were two closely-spaced signals on a slight hill, so that your eyes would naturally be drawn to the signal further in the distance that didn't apply to you. They ended up adding a median to make one of the intersections RIRO, but ancient GSV exists of the old setup.)

I don't know that it helps, exactly, considering it doesn't really let you know which one is yours. At least with the example on 78th Street, they used it in conjunction with 3M signals to help with that. On Southwest Blvd. you're on your own.

That's what I thought at first, but if you look at earlier GSV, the two signal assemblies always seem to be the same color. You can even find several captures of both being yellow. It's not like you get a green left arrow and a red ball, or worse, a red ball and a green ball.

I assume in this case it's because it's a shallow angle, so they're afraid someone on Mission Road is going to look at the signal for Southwest Blvd. or vice versa.

It would help if the signals had the name of the cross street on them so you could say "Oh, that signal says Mission Road on it, but I'm on Mission Road, so that's not my signal."

Duh. But if certain "special users" can be excessively pedantic and overanalyze everything, why can't I do the same?
