So how would one edit the OSM Americana basemap that isn't part of OSM? I have noticed some small things wrong with it at times.

Does anyone know where to find the link to the OSM basemap that looks like Rand McNally? I remember someone posted it a while back but I cant remember where or find it and searching keeps returning the "bad gateway" error

Quote from: I-55 on April 13, 2025, 09:39:41 PMThe correct question is "if ARDOT hasn't signed it, why does Google show it?" and the answer as usual is "because Google Maps signs stuff incorrectly all the time"

Now they've gotten rid of the blue line that appears on streets that have Street View photos.
Might as well face it, pooing is cool

I noticed that. Poogle Craps goes even further down the spiral. Google is a shit company.

Just a bug, and it looks like it's fixed now. Oddly, in Google Earth Pro, the blue lines disappeared until you zoomed out to an eye altitude of at least 20 miles.

Sometimes I wonder where Google gets their information. Apparently this small slip south of the St. Paul Downtown Airport is known as the Gulf of Minneapolis.

Don't tell Trump.

Between zoom level 8 and 9, "Antigua and Barbuda" is labelled twice. The labels are also strangely far to the east (all the other country/dependency labels are centred over the islands).

I'm more intrigued by the fact that there's a place in the Caribbean called "The Bottom."

It's where all the Tops go looking for a partner :-D

That brings up another point though. I think at this zoom level it'd make more sense to prioritize island names over towns (for example: replace "The Bottom" with "Saba")

The map makes it look like that's the bottom of the ocean.  But, in fact, it's at the top of the ocean!

Both Antigua and Barbuda labels are in the middle of the ocean, not particularly close to either Antigua or Barbuda.

My Google Maps app on my phone looks like it got a massive update yesterday while I was using it. New icon, new graphics. Not sure if I like the changes yet.

The other day I opened a website in Chrome that loaded in Japanese before recognizing my location and switching to English, and so I dismissed Google's translation prompt (perhaps a little too fast). Somehow this signaled to the Google overlords that I understood Japanese, so the next time I opened Street View in Mexico, it helpfully auto-translated the street names to Japanese for me. Unfortunately, I don't actually know Japanese (and ironically do know a little Spanish), so I was very confused.

Earlier today, Google Maps couldn't find certain cities in Upstate NY temporarily.  Bizarre.

But with shields that aren't nearly as large as Apple's, which is necessary for contrast if you're insisting on including a white border.

The way it renders road striping leaves something to be desired.

Looks fine on my end:

It's probably a form of AI, but (a) I disagree that it's slop, and (b) image analysis technology is not new in GIS.
