The famous "21 states in one day" exploit used the extra hour from the shift to standard time, plus another extra hour from changing time zones, to make the trip in a 26-hour day.  Both extra hours were needed to get to Mississippi just in time to make that state #21.

I also wonder when this forum's server makes the changeover, and whether you can post a reply with an earlier time stamp than the original post.

I believe internally the forum uses Unix timestamps, so there is no changeover.  When those timestamps are converted to your local time zone for display, the forum must decide between (for example) EDT and EST; I'm not sure whether it uses the one currently in effect, or the one that was in effect at the time being referenced.  If the latter, you could have a reply that appears to predate the original message, but only for users in one time zone.

Ours would have been last week as well, but Trick Or Treat is big here and a few years ago people realized it's safer for the kids in daylight.

Grumble grumble rant this annoys me still because the whole point of going treat-or-treating is that it is IN THE DARK. I've found that kids go out later and now don't have as long because a lot of neighborhoods enforce an 8pm "end time". rant grumble Grumble.

Roadrunner75

When I was young it seemed that Trick or Treat went later (and darker).  Definitely safer for kids during the day/early evening, but it's a chore to get home from work for both of us during daylight to hand out treats as well as take our own little guy out.  Now, once it hits 7-7:30 it's absolutely dead until a handful of young punks show up without costumes around 8-8:30.

One of the issues come about for those working those hours.  The NJ Turnpike would pay employees for 9 hours, since they work 1 extra hour.  In the spring, they still pay for an 8 hour shift when DST takes effect, even though one would have worked only 7 hours.

Bars are open based on what the time should have been without a change (at least in Jersey), so you're not drinking an extra hour Sunday morning if the bars close at 2am or later.

A particular intersection in Trenton, NJ has a different light timing for rush hour vs. non-rush hour.  But the internal calendar was based on the old Daylight Savings Time.  So every year, for a week in the fall and a few weeks in the spring, the timing was off for an hour, and that hour can really foul up traffic for the rest of the rush hour.  Over the past week I didn't notice any issues though, so maybe they finally updated the controller with the new DST dates.

One of the church bells around here usually remains off the correct hour anywhere from one to all months after the switch.

Ghosts, witches, and high school kids.  Not as much sex offenders and whatnot as is the custom today.

Lol, do NOT get me started down that rabbit trail. Ninety percent of sexual offenses are committed by someone the victim knows.

Haha, don't worry, the media has moved onto other hoaxes, like the dangers of colored contact lenses and potheads giving out Mary Janes with Mary Jane in them.

In the area where I grew up, you'd normally start seeing kids around 6:30, peak from 7-8, and then die down from 8 until 8:30 or 9.  While the volume has gone way down over the years, the trend is still largely the same as far as I know.

Didn't have any at my apartment.  Guess people didn't feel like going around the complex.

Sex offenders were always around; they just have a ton of media hype these days.

Well, my point was that the source of public fear changes.  Whether it reflects a change in what there is to be feared is another story.

Funny, you should say that.  This past Halloween, both Towamencin Twp., Montgomery County PA and Vineland, NJ had incidents where trick-or-treaters found razor blades in some of their candy.

Right, now if this stuff happens, it's because of copycats. It's why suicides aren't mentioned in the nightly news. It's also why I believe we shouldn't give media attention to mass shootings.
