What the Hell? State Road AZ Texas sign on ebay:
« on: August 22, 2015, 11:52:19 PM »

What the hell? Obviously, this resembles nothing that was real. The strange thing is that the deterioration looks real. I don't know how the hell hey did this or why. The ink lacks fading, and is run in a few places. I'm wondering if they printed it on an old deteriorated panel, they intentionally gouged it in a few places.

Did a little detective work. The seller is from Missouri, a state which uses letters for state routes. Also, there's a Texas County, Missouri. Wouldn't you know it, Highway AZ runs through Texas County:

Yes, that's an old design for Missouri's lettered state roads, as seen here: http://shields.aaroads.com/show.php?image=MO19480141

Why did they put the county name on a state highway sign? Were these state highways county-maintained?

That, I do not know. The lettered routes may well have been maintained by the individual counties back in those days.

Yes. Most were restricted by county

When I first clicked on the link, I was expecting a Highway AZ in the actual state of TX (instead of Texas County, MO); I don't think they've ever used letters for anything other than suffixes.

Also, it looks like the county itself is in the middle of the state, with the closest major junction being that of US 60 and US 63.

It's over near Willow Springs, I believe.

No.

http://www.self.gutenberg.org/articles/missouri_supplemental_route

Quote
The more major supplemental routes of the system are assigned single-letter designations (such as "K"). Minor branch routes and farm-to-market roads, which often end at county roads or are former alignments of other highways, are typically assigned two-letter designations consisting of two of the same letter (e.g. "KK"). Additionally, combinations of letters may be used, but always with "A" as the first letter (such as "AD"). The only exceptions are Route BA found in western St. Louis County, and RA in the town of Laurie in Morgan County.
