A late 1st snow of the year here....accompanied by lightning/thunder

I've been led to believe that thundersnow is pretty unusual. I've never seen it before, and, judging by Jim Cantore's reaction to the stuff several years, it's not particularly common.

Yes, thundersnow is fairly rare, though it tends to be more common with heavier lake effect snow bands coming off the Great Lakes, especially if there's a large temperature difference between the lake's surface water and air in the lower levels (up to ~5,000ft in height).  The aforementioned Chicago blizzard in 2011 was an example of this....while part of a larger storm system, the predominantly northeasterly winds meant that Chicago's snow was lake-effect in nature.

Besides what ET21 wrote (and you don't necessarily need a "very heavy snowfall rate" either...mine happened with moderate snowfall rates), you need a layer of instability above the surface and pretty steep lapse rates (the rate at which temperature cools as you go up in altitude).  The latter is what can help influence thunder/lightning with lake-effect snow bands.

The next 15 days (up to November 29) are surprisingly consistent. Highs range from 38 to 51; nothing below or even near freezing, and nothing unusually high.

I'm not sure how common 15 days without an outlier is, but it seems unusual to me.

And Roadgeekteen, you don't need to post anything in the range 38-51 for the next 15 days; only unusual ones should be reported.

I'm not sure if he just doesn't get it, or he's using this thread to spam and increase his post count. No one cares about his daily weather report.

^^ Speaking from long experience, I wouldn't put much trust or stock in temperature forecasts beyond roughly Day 5, and I wouldn't put ANY trust in past Day 9.

Spaghetti plots of H85 heights after day five are fun to look at though  :-D

More than 3 days out, forecasts aren't much good.  More than 5 days out and they're no better than historical climate data for that date.

For the usual stuff, like where rain will fall and for what part of the day, more than three to five days is indeed pretty useless. But beyond that, long-range models can predict whether or not a metro area has a chance of seeing X-type of weather more than a week out. Locally, KING and KOMO can see a snow-storm coming "for Western Washington" more than a week out, but specific details don't come until later.

^^ As a general rule, there is some "skill" to models and forecasts (defining "skill" as better than climatology) out to about Day 9.  After that point is where climatology is more accurate.

Currently -2 C (28 F) in Mackinaw City, MI. It's certainly cold by the water, but it was worth getting a good view of the Mackinac Bridge.

Currently 1 C (33 F) and snowing in Ironwood, MI (on the Wisconsin border). It was overcast in the eastern U.P., raining across the middle of the U.P., then quickly turned to snow in the western U.P. Here's a photo of driving through Ontonagon County on M-28.

Back to wearing heavy jacket. I hate cold weather because I have to carry around more clothes. I can't wait for spring!

Cold but not too cold. We have not reached the point when I am freezing with a down jacket on.

Thanks! Today's photo isn't as exciting, but here's the overcast sky over Minnesota on US 2

Going from Ironwood, MI to Ashland, WI this morning, most of the snow quickly disappeared. It was around the O C (32 F) mark in northern WI, and by the time we reached Grand Forks, ND around 6pm, it was -8 C (18 F). Now it's down to -11 C (13 F) - my body isn't ready for winter yet! :-D
