We made it through four tough days at The American Express in La Quinta, CA.  High temperature ranged from about 70°F-74°F over the four days.  Scoring was most difficult on Saturday when the wind picked up for a while.

I am sorry to say I don't think you'll be receiving much sympathy from much of the country this past weekend...  :D

Had our lowest low of the winter today at -5. Supposed to get up to 45 or so today though and melt all the snow we got last night.

After a very rainy December, January has proven to be exceptionally dry in the Seattle area. I believe we tied or exceeded the previous dry streak record of 15 or 16 days of no rain.

Temperature wise, it got down into low 20s and upper teens at night, but into the 40s during the day. Lots of hard freezes over the last couple weeks. The direct sunlight made afternoon walks very enjoyable, even with it being colder; a thermal undershirt and sweater were more than sufficient to keep me warm.

Bit of a return to form today. It rained for the first time last night, and today is back to mid 40s with clouds and rain.

While I get the hate for the relentless summer sunny and hot days, especially if you haven't invested in air conditioning, I can't think of a single bad thing about sunny winter days. That hasn't stopped some locals from celebrating the return of the weather that we get eight months of the year. God forbid it dries out for a bit...

Expecting some decent snow in South Carolina this weekend, I've seen estimates around 3-5" between Saturday and Sunday.

Finally back to normal winter conditions!  After over a week of unbearably cold temperatures, we're returning back to average for early February and is forecasted to stay right around normal all this week and then probably warm up even more this weekend.

Today's forecast is indicative of what we're looking at for the week ahead:

                                  ACTUAL                            AVERAGE
BROWNSVILLE:        76 high; 59 low                74 high; 56 low
CORPUS CHRISTI:    74 high; 55 low                71 high; 53 low
LAREDO:                  73 high; 53 low                72 high; 51 low
MCALLEN:                79 high; 56 low                77 high; 55 low

Not Miami; they happen to agree with us!

And the rest of the country has no idea how much easier they have it during the summer months.

Just had about ten minutes of brilliant sunshine in between two snow showers. As one band moved off to the southeast, another was already moving in from the northwest. It was quite surreal to watch in real time.

We've had measurable snowfall on 80% of days the last two weeks (12/15) and it's currently 2°F, so the sun shining on the windswept white landscape was a beautiful sight. Gotta love winter in the Great Lakes.  :coffee:

Meanwhile, I considered not even wearing a jacket to church yesterday morning at 7:45 am.  Today is supposed to get up to 76°F.  If I hadn't been lazier, I'd have washed the car yesterday afternoon.

Yeah, the Great Lakes provide relentless precipitation but their moderating influence does prevent those really huge temperature swings. The temperature was -1°F when I woke up this morning, which is considered exceptionally cold. Sub-zero temps usually occur only a few times per season at most. Meanwhile, we most recently hit 70°F in February two years ago (2/27/2024), and it looks like that was one of only 4 instances in recorded history of 70°F+ in February!

Today started out at a frigid -26C (-15F), but it's expected to reach a decent -7C (19F) this afternoon. It's been a very cold and snowy winter here, feels like I've been shovelling every other day.

An early dose of Spring-like conditions for this long Presidents Day (or Washington Day if you prefer to call it that) weekend.  These temperatures are normal for late-to-end April.

Humidity is light-to-moderate with dew points in the mid/upper 60s and could be nearing 70 degrees along the beaches, even so the heat index should still remain short of triple-digits (90 to 98 degrees).

We held steady at 80% (4 of 5) days with snowfall this week, for a clean 16 of 20 since the Jan 24th storm.

More broadly, the most solid month of "real" winter I can remember is drawing to a close, with temps forecast to hit 40°F tomorrow and/or Monday for the first time since Jan 14th.

Next week looks to be the start of a freeze-thaw volley: sources vary slightly, but we could be in for 8 straight days with a daytime high above freezing followed by an overnight low below freezing.

Meanwhile here in Wichita, it was about 50°F when I left for work this morning, and the forecast for today is sunny and 72°F.  Yesterday after lunch, three of us walked to the grocery store and back.  Round trip 1.6 miles, no jacket required.

25°F and snowing at a rate of about 3 inches per hour, which definitely qualifies for "blizzard".

Fortunately there's not much wind or this would be a blinding whiteout.  I would still rate driving conditions as "impossible" though, and looking at a few local traffic cameras, people who tried to go somewhere are in some cases standing outside of their sideways cars.  Within the last 5 minutes at the top of Daggett Pass, elevation about 7300:

For shoveling and snowblowing it isn't bad.  Usually when we get a big snowstorm the temperature is closer to 32°F, which doesn't produce 3 inches per hour but the stuff that falls is wet and much tougher to move around than this.

gonealookin

Adding to the post immediately above, I had 35 inches of snow at my house from 8 p.m. last night to 8 p.m tonight, which is a new personal 24-hour record in my 17 winters at Tahoe.  I'm at elevation 6500 feet and there are people who live 1000 feet higher who would have seen more.

I don't know what my record would be for a stormy period; probably along the lines of 5 feet in 3 days, and 7 or 8 feet in a week.

Meanwhile, a co-worker and I were joking the other morning about how any temperature above freezing accompanied by sunshine feels like 70°F to us.

Today, another storm is moving through and we're right on the edge of the snow/rain dividing line. Precipitation was falling as a wintry mix earlier but now it's dumping snow with huge flakes and there's a fresh inch on the ground. Not bad for mid-day in mid-February with a temperature of 33°F. Considering the forecast showed mostly rain with some sleet/freezing rain mixing in, my expectations are well exceeded, but it could be a very different scene 10 miles south.

Seriously, we had a few days recently with sun and in the 0-5C range (~ 32-41F) and it felt so nice I drove with the windows down! I even saw someone walking in shorts (but they still had a winter coat on) :-D

We've had freezing rain here since the morning. Hopefully the short drive to my parent's house tonight isn't too bad.

It's a sunny day today and the all-year roads in the Sierra have been reopened, though with chain restrictions because there's still a lot of ice and packed snow and the high temperature today likely will stay below freezing.

For the five days, the local ski resorts generally report about 90 to 110 inches of snow, and after an extended dry period came right back up to around 100% of season average to date.  At my house I measured it at 47 inches.  I was able to keep up with the shoveling and snowblowing (what else are you going to be doing in that weather?) and with one last round coming up this morning I'll be totally clear.  Resort reports are here:

https://x.com/TahoeWeather/status/2024886164390641706

The Snow Lab says their 111 inches is the third-most they have received in a 5-day period since they started keeping the records in 1970, and it's the most in 5 days since 1982.

It is a high of 90F today in Jalisco.  Quite the temperature jump from 49F when I arrived at the airport in Guadalajara this morning.
