For a region that prides itself on handling snowfall with aplomb, the roads sure were a disaster this morning. Typically the roads are fine after a few inches of snow, but I guess after nearing 70°F yesterday, an initial layer of sleet and ice followed by snow with heavy blowing and drifting caught everyone by surprise.

Currently -9C (16F) in Arthur, ON, but feels like -24C (-11F) with the wind chill. Not a fun day to be working on-site! It's also been overcast most of the day which doesn't help.

20s this morning

Rising to near 100 this weekend

Who needs spring, anyway?
I'd like to buy a vowel, Alex.  What is E?

All roads lead away from Rome.

Pfft.  There's only so much salting one can do on the amount of ice we had.

Did Rochester and Syracuse have the heavy rain change to snow at the end?  Not much pre-treating that can be done in those conditions...

Mostly snow here. There was a bit of rain Tuesday evening, but it quickly changed to sleet and then snow.

What I found more notable was that the snow ended around midnight, but many roads were still bad this morning. I was also referring to the traffic conditions, not just road conditions (though both were bad).

High temperature at South Lake Tahoe airport today was 70°F  69°F.  March 17 is not the earliest 70°F ever (previous was March 27, 1988).

Forecast highs for March 18, 19 and 20 are 73°F, 74°F and 74°F.  All of these would beat the warmest day ever in the month of March (71°F on March 30, 2015) and also would be the warmest days ever before April 11.  The records through April 10 are no higher than 72°F, then finally there's a 75°F on April 11, 1988.  The springs of both 1988 and 1989 still hold quite a few of the warmest-day records.

There's no snow at all left at Lake Tahoe level, and even going over Spooner Summit on US 50 to Carson City this afternoon, at a bit over 7100 feet, it's patchy at best at that elevation.

Edit:  I saw 70°F on the raw output but NWS says the official high on March 17 was 69°F.  It does look like everything else stands, just that the earliest-ever 70°F will be March 18.

Clear skies this morning, but the temp at dawn was barely below 50°F.

The forecast calls for a high of 87°F this afternoon, which is just 4° shy of the record high for this date.

Saturday's forecast calls for 95°F, which would be a new record.

Quite a change from the mid-teens that I woke up to Monday morning.

Here in Lawton on this Thursday afternoon it's current 87°F and sunny with a forecast high of 93°F. On Saturday the temperature here is currently forecast to hit 98°F. Some locations around here could top 100°F. Tomorrow is the first day of Spring and it's like we're trying to jump forward into June.

76°F on March 18 and 72°F on March 19 are the two warmest high temperatures ever at KTVL (South Lake Tahoe) in the month of March.  The official records at that location only go back to 1968 but still...

The 76°F is particularly spectacular, as we had never previously hit that temperature between the dates of October 22 (in 1988) and April 30 (in 1981).

Edit:  And the streak continues...

KTVL South Lake Tahoe airport temperature statistics for March (since 1968).  There have been nine straight days where the high temperature record has been tied or broken.  The streak should end today as the forecast high of 62°F would fall six degrees short of the 2015 record.  This has killed the snowpack, and the ski resorts whose terrain doesn't reach up to higher elevations have already shut down.

For the 25 days so far in March, two have been below the average high temperature for the date, one equaled average, and 22 have exceeded the average, each of them from March 11-25 by at least 13 degrees.

Very windy today, with a high in the mid-90s.  Yet tomorrow's forecast low is 33°.

We missed the earlier heat wave across most of the US, but it's currently mostly cloudy and 19C (66F) in Mississauga, ON! It feels fantastic to walk outside without a coat on!

It wouldn't be the Oklahoma college experience without a legit tornado. One passed merely three miles away from where I live right now. You good @bugo?

I haven't lived in Tulsa since 2024, but thanks for the concern. I'm in western Arkansas for the time being, and we have a chance of storms tomorrow. There are some tornado warnings near Fayetteville right now.

DFW has somehow missed out on big weather all spring, despite it having been abnormally warm since basically the second week of February.

There have been a few watches issued, but each time, the storms weakened before they got to us. Same is expected for overnight tonight and into tomorrow — Wichita Falls and west is Level 2 (slight risk), but we're at Level 1 (marginal risk) and I may not even hear thunder. We need the rain, though.

Since 8am, we've gone from heat on to heat off but windows closed to windows open and now we're on the verge of having to close the windows to turn on the AC.

34°F with wet snow falling at Lake Tahoe level.  The chain controls are up on some trans-Sierra highways (I-80 and CA SR 88), with US 50 not subject to controls for now.

There was a Twitter comment from Caltrans District 9 yesterday that implies that SR 108 is basically ready to be reopened for the year (winter snow cleared and necessary repairs done), but with a series of spring storms coming through they'll wait to do the reopening, rather than doing intermittent closings.  It's rare to see that highway opened before early May.

Parts of Fresno were under a tornado warning until 3 PM today.  It was mild showers from the morning until an actual thunderstorm got going in the Coalinga area around 1:30 PM.  The storm moved northeast towards Fresno and gradually got worse leading up to the warning.

It's currently a beautiful 19C (66F) and sunny in Arthur, ON. And to think on Monday the high was only 3C (37F)!
